Actor Kristen Bell has a brand new series out on Netflix and, lucky for the world, the trailer has a quick shot of her decked out in black lingerie. Of course, this will not be the first time that fans have gotten a risque picture of the star of The Good Place and Veronica Mars. It was not all that long ago that her spouse Dax Shepard posted an image of her doing her morning yoga routine while wearing only socks. It was about as close to naked as Instagram will allow, but the actual caption text from Shepard was the kind of affirming praise of his famous wife that has made their relationship a consistently heartwarming part of Hollywood. In this screenshot from her new streaming show The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, you can see Bell prone in a messy room, taking selfies with a somewhat maniacal look on her face. After watching, you can get a little more context that this is not a sexy romantic romp, but a dark comedy thriller, and it sure seems like Bell’s character’s lingerie is part of some kind of breakdown (or possibly a scheme). As you might infer from the incredibly lengthy title, The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window, Kristen Bell’s Netflix show is a satire of the recent wave of dark psychological thrillers like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and AJ Finn’s The Woman in the Window. Given that Bell is best known for her comedic roles in The Good Place and as the titular Forgetting Sarah Marshall, it is no surprise that this is not exactly a straightforward parody. The eight episode series splits the difference between sending up the tropes of the genre (Bell’s character is often seen knocking back immense glasses of wine, for example) and recreating them. The show was created by Rachel Ramras, Hugh Davidson, and Larry Dorf, all of whom have worked in off-kilter, pop culture-heavy comedies like Robot Chicken and Mike Tyson Mysteries.
It is also executive produced by Will Ferrell, who has frequently demonstrated a fondness for comedies that straddle sincere oddity and straight mockery. In 2015, he made a Lifetime movie with Kristen Wiig called A Deadly Adoption that had a similar earnest devotion to its source material. He also produced the wildly bizarre mini-series The Spoils of Babylon and The Spoils Before Dying, which did the same thing for 1970s prestige TV like The Thornbirds that The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window attempts to do for Gone Girl. Worth watching if only to see Ferrell do extended Orson Welles cosplay. Kristen Bell’s latest series is garnering mixed reviews from critics, but she is specifically praised for her work. And for the lingerie, naturally.
