Next Star Wars Trilogy Of Films In The Works?
There could be a new Star Wars trilogy of movies in the works from LucasFilm and Disney with a whole new story and direction

While the Star Wars franchise has been actively moving away from the film trilogy model it used for oh so many decades, there apparently is still room for this grouping of flicks in the future. There are starting to be some rumblings that a new Star Wars trilogy of films could be headed into development and it would be another massive piece of news for a franchise that’s only in growth mode these days. It looks like Lucasfilm and company is starting to move along with a possible plan for a new Star Wars trilogy of movies, this one looking off into the future and possibly updating some of the older themes of the franchise.
This latest piece of Star Wars trilogy news comes from Vanity Fair’s Joanna Robinson who talked on the Ringer-verse podcast (via CBR and ScreenRant) last week. She says that Disney and Lucasfilm are working on another trilogy of films that would follow the sequel trilogy which just wrapped up a few years ago. While it wasn’t clear if there would be carryover in terms of characters from those films, there seems to be an active discussion about how the franchise might shift its storytelling methods and character arcs.
This latest word wasn’t just around the idea of a new Star Wars trilogy, but there was some feeling about which direction it would go. During the discussion, after being asked about a new Jedi Order for the future, Robinson let on that this was the exact line of storytelling the studio was currently contemplating. Essentially, a new trilogy would flip some of the traditional Star Wars mechanics around the Jedi specifically, possibly having them realize the mistakes that were made in the past by other heroes we’ve seen on the big screen.
Essentially, and again this is mostly rumored at this point, if imagining a new Star Wars trilogy that followed the events of Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, Robinson and The Ringer folks discussed the ideas around attachment in the Jedi Order. This followed a discussion about the nature of choice within the Jedi group: having to decide between being part of the Order or hold onto ideas of the past. We’ve seen this play out many times throughout the first run of movies. The characters are sometimes left with impossible choices that determine their ultimate fate (good or bad). A new Star Wars trilogy would do away with that kind of previously conventional thinking about what it means to be a Jedi.
And if there was a time to pivot ideas from the past, especially within the Star Wars universe, now definitely seems like the time. The franchise is clearly in growth mode, no longer relying on massive movie releases every few years. With the Disney+ series picking up steam after the success of The Mandalorian and now The Book of Boba Fett, standalone movies on the horizon, returns to characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader, and much more, it’s a great time to be a fan of Star Wars. Bringing along a new Star Wars trilogy that looked off into the future with a new eye for how the Jedi could operate would be very welcome indeed. We will see how this takes shape over time.
