Mark Wahlberg has been in the entertainment scene since the 1980s. The actor has starred in a broad spectrum of films from hilarious comedies to serious dramas. Although a good chunk of Wahlberg’s films have received positive reviews, there is only one movie that he wants to make a sequel to: The Fighter. However, the possibility of a sequel is quite questionable.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Mark Wahlberg brought up The Fighter, and his feelings towards being involved in a second installment of the film. Even though the actor doesn’t necessarily involve himself with sequels, a continuation of the story is something he would definitely consider, especially for the fans. “But if the audience really wants it, and they really love it, and we can make one better than the first then I’d be willing to do it again, for sure.”
However, there is a slight problem that might hinder the possibility of a sequel. As he told the publication, “I’m now probably aging out of that.” In this modern generation, however, a little bit of makeup can do the trick of making Mark Wahlberg look the age that Mickey Ward was when he was doing his biggest fights as a boxer. Wahlberg also mentioned to ScreenRant that one of Ward’s biggest and iconic boxing fights wasn’t portrayed in The Fighter. According to The Digital Fix, Ward had three fights against boxer Arturo Gotti, and was known as ‘the fight of the century.’ A sequel would be ideal to portray such iconic boxing matches.
The Fighter was released in theaters in 2010, and received critical acclaim. The movie not only starred Mark Wahlberg, but other well-known and talented actors such as Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Melissa Leo. The film follows Wahlberg’s character, Mickey Ward, and his half-brother, Dicky Eklund, played by Bale. Micky Ward wants to achieve greatness and success as a professional boxer, and he accepts and depends on the help of his brother, Eklund to make his dream into a reality.
Mark Wahlberg’s The Fighter is actually based on the true story of Mickey Ward from a documentary titled High on Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell. The 2010 film was a box office success. With a budget of $25 million, the movie raked in almost $130 million at the box office. Alongside that success, the movie received excellent reviews that applauded the actors, to the screenplay, and the directing. David O. Russell was the director of the movie. O. Russell is known for his talent, and has also directed other films such as American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. Mark Wahlberg was not only one of the main actors in the film, but he also produced the movie. The film received seven Academy Award nominations, and won two. Melissa Leo won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and Christian Bale won Best Supporting Actor. On IMDb, the film has a current high score of 7.8.
Due to the success of The Fighter, a sequel would be something to consider to put into action since there is also more to the story. Mark Wahlberg seems to already be on board, and perhaps other original stars like Amy Adams and Christian Bale also might be interested in the potential project. Wahlberg has worked on many comedic films in the past and also a few that are set to be released, most notably Uncharted with Tom Holland. But at the moment, a sequel to The Fighter is yet to be confirmed.
