Star Wars fans, eat your galactic hearts out with this one because there’s some pretty exciting news on the Disney+ series front. At long last, we have an official release date for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on the streamer. According to Deadline, the next in line of popular offerings within this universe will be hitting screens on May 25th of this year, in a move that almost seems like it will be kicking off the summer of programming. That is a Wednesday right before Memorial Day weekend. The Ewan McGregor-led series will return us to a timeline that’s been essentially overlooked up until now in live-action movie or series form.
We’ve known the Obi-Wan Kenobi has been getting close on the release front considering it’s been in development for so long and had actually started filming at the beginning of the summer last year. The timeline has been setting up this way for the series and marks a strict pivot from what’s been happening timeline-wise on Disney+ now with The Mandalorian/ Book of Boba Fett crushing the initial offerings for the streamer in the Star Wars franchise. This new show is slated to actually now return us to the time following the events of Revenge of Sith. And there are other projects coming that will seemingly act as complementary pieces to this one as well.
In Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor will reprise his titular role from the prequel trilogy which wrapped up with Episode III. This series will take place a decade after the events of that movie, following Obi-Wan in his life on Tatooine protecting a young Luke Skywalker. Though that story is sure to factor into things in significant ways, it’s essentially the basis for this entire piece of the Star Wars timeline, producers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and company have shown us the ability to use these stories to greatly expand the greater galaxy in a way the movies haven’t been able to/ nor wanted to do. That’s been the fantastic piece of what we are getting on Disney+, the chance to fill in the gaps in timelines, character arcs, and other critical pieces of the franchises. Having continuity around Ewan McGregor in the role makes things all that much better. Check out the stunning poster below.
And Ewan McGregor isn’t going to be the only familiar “face” returning for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Hayden Christensen is also set to reprise his role of Darth Vader/ Anakin Skywalker for the series as well. How much he’ll actually appear in this one isn’t known, though we do know that some of this will almost definitely set up the standalone series Christensen is working on around the character. There is some chance his character has just some table-setting here. Though his presence will undoubtedly be a major part of the series arc.
Also confirmed in the Obi-Wan Kenobi cast are Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Owen and Beru Lars, Luke’s aunt and uncle on Tatooine. Plus Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr. Sung Kang, and Indira Varma are here as well. And finally, Rupert Friend is on board, possibly as the main antagonist the Grand Inquisitor.
We have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Obi-Wan Kenobi. And now we have a date to set our sights on. It won’t be long now and the galaxy shouldn’t be too far away.
