Update: This Giant Freakin Robot exclusive was confirmed, and Anson Mount played Blak Bolt in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

If you missed Anson Mount’s turn as Black Bolt for Marvel, you wouldn’t be alone. Inhumans got a rocky start in the cinematic world. An adaptation for the comics was first announced as a movie for Phase 3. When that was canceled, the focus shifted to the ABC series. Hopes were incredibly high for that one. The first episode actually premiered on IMAX screens in theaters. That was the first time a TV series ever did that. Then the series premiered on ABC, only to be canceled eight episodes later. This was a rough start! Black Bolt is an important Marvel character. He’s a king. In the comics, he’s a member of the Illuminati alongside Doctor Strange himself. While the show was canceled, and the characters had a rocky start, it doesn’t sound like Marvel is ready to give up on them just yet. A trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot has shared that Anson Mount is set to make his return as Black Bolt for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

This is such fantastic news for the actor. He didn’t get to play Black Bolt for Marvel for very long, and it would be great to see these characters fleshed out. While we learned that Anson Mount is making a Marvel return, we don’t know yet know which project we will first see the character in. We can speculate that it would be Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness. Black Bolt knows Strange in the comics. There have been rumors that a character from Inhumans will appear in that film. However, that’s speculation. What we can report is that Giant Freakin Robot’s source shared that Black Bolt is coming back and that he will be played by Anson Mount when he does.

Other than what movie or Marvel series Anson Mount could be appearing in, we have a lot of other questions. Does this mean the other Inhumans are returning to the cinematic universe? Will they start off with just Black Bolt and see how it goes?

Another big question is whether this makes Inhumans officially canon to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is a particularly big question. Inhumans were first introduced as a species in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. So it could be said that Inhumans takes place in the same world as Agents. The canonical status of Agents is hotly debated. Based on the actions of Disney+, it looks like it’s been erased from canon. This tells us a lot of important things about Anson Mount’s return. Characters like Black Bolt from ABC and Daredevil from Netflix are making their Marvel Cinematic Universe debuts. Daredevil/Matt Murdock was just seen in No Way Home, something we exclusively reported before the movie came out. Does this make Netflix’s Daredevil canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Not necessarily.

There are reports that suggest these returning actors are pulling a “soft reboot” for their characters. This would mean that Anson Mount is returning as Black Bolt. That he’ll play the character the same way. But that the Black Bolt we see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe won’t reference things from ABC’s Inhumans and should be considered a reboot of the character.

That’s a confusing idea for a lot of people in the audience, but it’s one that gives the Marvel Universe a little more freedom. This way, they won’t have to account for the stories in every episode of ABC and Netflix Marvel shows when building the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Is that what Marvel plans with Black Bolt? We aren’t sure. It’s going to be interesting to see how this comes together though, and what it means for all the actors returning to their former characters in these new projects. If Anson Mount’s return is handled the same way Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil was, we may not get more news on Black Bolt’s MCU debut until he appears on the screen, but we’ll be watching to see how his big reveal unfolds.
