Whoopi Goldberg has tweeted an apology following her controversial holocaust claims which led to a back and forth on ABC’s The View, brought to light via a report from Deadline. This all came about as a result of a discussion surrounding the banning of Art Spiegelman’s Maus novel across the Tennessee school district. The discussion led to Goldberg allegedly claiming the Holocaust was, “not about race.”
This sparked a back and forth between Goldberg and the other panelists on The View, with co-host Joy Behar asking, “Then what is it about?” Goldberg responded by saying, “Man’s inhumanity to man.” Needless to say, Whoopi Goldberg’s alleged remarks sparked a negative backlash. Jonathan Greenblatt, leader of the Anti-Defamation League and the US Holocaust museum all tweeted in regards to Goldberg’s remarks. They were not alone in their criticism. Sky News reported a tweet written by American Actress Debra Messing who wrote:

However, this is not the first time that Whoopi Goldberg has come under fire by claims made under the ever scrutinizing and watchful eye of the media. Just last year, Goldberg received backlash after some alleged remarks regarding Apartheid. Goldberg reportedly laid claim to ending Apartheid in a series of confusing comments and allegedly cited President Biden in the remarks as well. This was another case of Goldberg’s comment causing uproar across social media, and this case was just a little over half a year ago. Is it possible that this is a worrying pattern emerging?
Fans of The View and Whoopi Goldberg will be hoping this is the last of the controversy and that no further repeats will occur. The 66-year-old oscar-winning actress has been a co-host on The View since 2007. With two controversies so close together, some may think that this tenure ought to be coming to an end. The cries for Goldberg’s release from the show were heard loudest from Piers Morgan. In a series of tweets, Morgan claimed that he and others had been fired for similar remarks. One particular case he cited was that of Sharon Osbourne, who was fired from CBS’ The Talk, for siding with Morgan himself regarding his dismissal in response to comments made about Megan Markle.
Whoopi Goldberg will look to avoid suffering a similar fate to Osbourne and any further negative criticism. This incident left Goldberg being shone in a bad light, despite her apology. The story certainly overshadows the news that Goldberg is set to reprise her role in the Star Trek Universe, as revealed in a trailer for the second series of Star Trek: Picard. It will be interesting to see if her apology gains significant traction in the eyes of audiences and media outlets the world over.
