Robert Pattinson is set to put a pretty new, and much more grim, spin on the Caped Crusader when he stars in The Batman coming out in just a couple of months. In the short term, we’ve been getting more and more looks at this film with teasers and trailers coming out over the last couple of weeks. And now we’ve got more on the way with an extended scene releasing this week showing Pattinson as Bruce Wayne attending a funeral in Gotham City. It offers a few different details and gives an updated look at some of what we will get with this film.
The new The Batman video came via director Matt Reeves who put it up on Vimeo. In it, Robert Pattinson actually has nothing to say, letting his face the circumstances tell most of the story here. For an extended look, we can figure some things out as well, with the scene actually featuring a number of the main players here in one sense or another. Check out the funeral scene from The Batman before we break down a bit of what’s happening.
Things start off with Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne talking to Jayme Lawson’s Bella Real as they enter the church. She is pleading with Wayne to get more involved with Gotham City on the philanthropical line, urging Wayne to take more of a cue from what his family had done in the past. Wayne seems disinterested in this line, though clearly takes notice of the young boy sitting at the front who has lost his parent or parents recently.
And then we get another look at Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon who is discussing the disappearance of Gotham City’s District Attorney Gil Colson. Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne is recognized here but does do anything in the form of banter with the cop crowd, instead starting to tune into a disturbance coming from outside. As it dawns on him that something is seriously wrong, he notices a figure in the balcony section who is looking at him, disinterested in the rest of the commotion. We come to find out that this is Paul Dano’s Riddler who has just started terrorizing Gotham City.
Finally, the out-of-control car comes barreling through the front of the church with Robert Pattinson leaping to rescue the kid before the vehicle ultimately crashes into the front. The “driver” is Gil Colson (Peter Skarsgaard) who has clearly been captured and forced to do this against his will. He’s gagged with a phone attached to his hand and a note for Batman taped to his chest.
The Batman is set to follow Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne in his first year taking on the cape and cowl to fight crime in the city. Early on he’s the target of the Riddler who is a much more sadistic and lethal version of the character than we have seen in the past. He more resembles a serial killer in this version. And in addition to some of the names featured above, we will also have Zoe Kravitz as Selena Kyle/ Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/ Penguin, and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth.
It won’t be long until we see how all of this plays out with Robert Pattinson as Batman. The movie is set to release on March 4th of this year.
