Patrick Stewart Confirms When Star Trek: Picard Will End

Throughout his expansive career, Patrick Stewart has played many memorable roles but none have left a long-lasting impression like his Star Trek character, Starfleet admiral Jean-Luc Picard. The character appeared for the first time in the series Star Trek The Next Generation as the captain of the USS Enterprise. The series was set almost a hundred years after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. The character experienced a resurgence in his fame when Stewart agreed to reprise the character in the currently airing Star Trek: Picard. But sadly, Picard’s much-loved comeback is inching towards its conclusion at warp speed. The hype around Patrick Stewart’s return was such that Star Trek: Picard was greenlit for Season 2 (and informally for Picard Season 3 as well) even before it had debuted on CBS All Access (now Paramount+).
Both seasons are currently being filmed back-to-back and given the positive reviews the show had managed to garner, many expected it to follow the path of its predecessors like Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran for seven long seasons. But Stewart has brought all those expectations to a standstill by revealing when the show plans on concluding its journey across the galaxy. In a chat with SFX Magazine (via Slashfilm), Patrick Stewart and Star Trek: Picard producer Akiva Goldsman revealed that they are planning to wrap up the series with Picard season 3, which was pre-decided.
Yep, fellow Star Trek fans, we will not be getting a fourth season of our beloved series. But is the decision to end the show based on the storyline that has been mapped out for its central character, to create space for the trillion Star Trek shows that are set to debut on Paramount+, or is Stewart unwilling to play Picard beyond Season 3?
Back in 2018, when Star Trek: Picard was first announced, with Patrick Stewart reprising his famous Star Trek character, executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin had confirmed that the plan was to run the show for multiple seasons, hinting that they were aiming for a long-term series like The Next Generation, Voyager, etc. Then in 2020, Akiva Goldsman shared with Collider.com that they could run the series “forever” but at the end of the day, he admitted that it will have a future “as long as Patrick Stewart wants to do it.”
As for Patrick Stewart, the actor has always had conflicting feelings about reprising his role once again in Star Trek: Picard. In a chat with NPR, Stewart had shared that before reading the script for the show, he initially planned to turn down the offer and only wanted to meet up with the brains behind the show to say no to them. In fact, the X-Men star has even clarified that while he has enjoyed the “sudden transformation” his life has undergone ever since he started playing Picard, it is “not enough” for him and he wants to do “something bigger.”
While Patrick Stewart may or may not be the reason behind the series’ ending, it is better to focus on other important things, like the second season of Star Trek: Picard, which is all set to debut on Paramount+ on March 3, 2022.
