By all accounts, Matt Reeves is about to release one of the darker superhero and comic book adaptations we have ever seen when The Batman finally hits theaters this year. It’s been a long time coming and sure looks like it takes the Caped Crusader, and Gotham City in general, into a much grittier and grim territory. There’s a certain level of dread coming through the first trailers, something we haven’t seen all that much of in this world. And it looks like another comic book movie house wants to bring this same vibe to an upcoming project as well. Giant Freakin Robot has the exclusive from our trusted and proven source that Kevin Feige at Marvel is eyeing up Matt Reeves for a darker project in that universe. It would certainly continue a shift happening in the MCU.

While there are no firm details on what this project could be, the idea here is that Kevin Feige is a big fan of Matt Reeves‘ directorial and writing work, seeing it lining up with how the Marvel Cinematic Universe is trending into the future. There’s certainly starting something of a shift for the MCU in some recent projects and others down the line aren’t looking nearly as lighthearted as the first few phases of movies. Look no further than the first trailers and images of the upcoming Moon Knight with Oscar Isaac in the lead role. The first full trailer had a very dark tone with Isaac’s character clearly dealing with major mental issues and Ethan Hawke’s Arthur Harrow a creepy cult leader. There is a new vibe coming to Marvel that could fit Matt Reeves and his stylings.

That’s because it sure seems like Matt Reeves is about to give us a much different look at Batman and this universe than we’ve seen before. The Batman has been labeled almost like a horror movie, something we aren’t used to seeing out of the big comic book houses these days. Taking pages out of Batman: Year One and some other comic book storylines, the movie will have Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/ Batman facing off against a version of The Riddler that isn’t exactly about maniacal laughs and prancing around in a question mark-heavy green suit. Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton/ Riddler is much more the serial killer type, terrorizing Gotham and playing a dangerous psychological game with Batman.

And other elements of The Batman look like it will do significantly more early Batman Universe world-building than other iterations. In addition to Robert Pattinson and Paul Dano, other notables are on board in major character roles for the first film. There’s Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot/ Penguin, Zoe Kravitz as Selena Kyle/ Catwoman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, and Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon.

Matt Reeves is among the most talented directors out there right now, able to take huge productions or even remakes of popular original material and give it a totally new vibe. The Batman looks that way and he didn’t something similar with the second two films in the updated The Planet of the Apes trilogy. A Marvel project would definitely be in good hands here if Feige and Reeves were able to lock something up. In the meantime, it won’t be long until The Batman hits the big screen with the long-delayed flick finally getting a release on March 4th of this year.
