It’s been a minute since Whoopi Goldberg appeared in the Star Trek universe. But now, the actress is set to reprise her role as Guinan in the second season of Star Trek: Picard. Her character’s return comes after Patrick Stewart invited her back into the fold during an appearance on The View in 2020. The actress has taken him up on the offer, and now appears in he new trailer for the Paramount+ series.
You can see screencaps of Whoopi Goldberg as Guinan back in the Star Trek universe below.
In the video clip, Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan meets Jean-Luc Picard in the Ten-Forward lounge, where the two have a much-needed chat about important space things. “I’m going to need some tea: Earl Grey, piping hot,” she says. When Picard asks her for advice, she gives him a very on-brand answer. “Your answers are not in the stars. And they never have been. I believe you have one final frontier yet to come.” The trailer also features a breathtaking view of downtown Los Angeles and a little boy who has an unwanted encounter with aliens.
Whoopi Goldberg first played the Ten-Forward lounge bartender aboard the starship USS Enterprise-D on Star Trek: The Next Generation, from 1988 to 1993. Her character is an alien who is several hundred years old. She is known for her warmth and folk wisdom, which she often uses to defuse difficult situations or comfort folks aboard the ship who are struggling with something. Since then, the Academy Award-winning actress appeared as Guinan in various Star Trek media, including her likeness in the comic books and novels. The character also had a light-hearted crossover comic run with Doctor Who.
Before Whoopi Goldberg joined the cast, Star Trek: Picard was created by Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, Kirsten Beyer, and Alex Kurtzman in 2020. It is the eighth Star Trek series and was launched as part of Kurtzman’s expanded Star Trek Universe. The story focuses on a retired Jean-Luc Picard who has been deeply affected by the death of Data in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis and the destruction of the planet Romulus in 2009’s Star Trek.
Retired from Starfleet and living on his family’s vineyard, Picard is drawn into a new adventure when he is visited by Data’s daughter – one of several new synthetic beings. He fights for their right to exist and gives his life to save them in the first season finale. But Picard’s consciousness is transferred into a synthetic body and he goes on to face his old adversary Q in the ultimate trial. With Q breaking reality, Picard and his companions (like Whoopi Goldberg’s Guinan) are trapped in the 21st century and must race against time to save the future of the galaxy.
Patrick Stewart executive produces the series and stars as iconic Starfleet Captain Picard, reprising his role from the series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Alison Pill, Isa Briones, Evan Evagora, Michelle Hurd, Santiago Cabrera, Harry Treadaway, Jeri Ryan, Orla Brady, Brent Spiner, and Whoopi Goldberg also star. Produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, the series is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Akiva Goldsman, Terry Matalas, Stewart, Heather Kadin, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Doug Aarniokoski, and Dylan Massin. Aaron Baiers and Kirsten Beyer serve as co-executive producers, while Goldsman and Matalas serve as co-showrunners for season two. Star Trek: Picard season two will debut on Paramount+ on March 3rd. A third season is set to premiere in early 2023.
