Mabel “Madea” Earlene Simmons has been hamming it up on the big screen for over two decades. The elderly fictional character stemmed from the mastermind of academy award-winning actor, director, producer, and screenwriter, Tyler Perry. A long-running character strewn throughout dozens of films, Madea won over the hearts of moviegoers with her unique sense of humor and no mess attitude. Recently, Perry dusted off Madea’s famous moo moo dresses for her upcoming return to the screen in A Madea Homecoming as Netflix debuts the upcoming film’s first look.

Set to begin streaming on Netflix on February 25th, the photos tease at the hilarious antics Tyler Perry surely will deliver once again with his famous character. The images show the return of not only Madea but her frequent co-stars as well. Cora (Tamela Mann), Mr. Brown (David Mann), and Aunt Bam (Cassi Davis Patton) will all reprise their roles once again for the upcoming movie. Also, the shared images reveal another iconic character set to join Madea. The popular U.K drag character, Agnes Brown (Brendan O’Carroll), originally of Mr. Brown’s Boys, will crossover for the feature film.
With many details surrounding the upcoming film remaining under wraps despite its impending release, the plot will center around Madea’s great-grandson’s college graduation. However, the celebratory moment hits a halt as hidden secrets and family drama threaten to destroy the happy reunion. Perry also says his new Madea film revolves around an LGBTQ storyline, which is something he hopes sends a message of inclusion. Tyler Perry will continue on with tradition in writing, directing, and starring as the titular character for the 12th installment in the long-running franchise. In building up anticipation for the upcoming film, Perry even posted a parody photo for the film depicting Madea channeling some Beyonce vibes from the musician’s famous Homecoming look, with the tongue-in-cheek tagline, “Live from her backyard.”
Tyler Perry first debuted the outspoken character that the 52-year-old has famously played in 1999. First appearing in a series of plays, Madea’s success brought Perry to create the character’s first film in 2005’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman, going on to appear in nearly a dozen films. Perry once said Madea is “exactly the PG version of my mother and my aunt, and I loved having an opportunity to pay homage to them. She would beat the hell out of you but make sure the ambulance got there in time to make sure they could set your arm back” about the beloved character.
Sadly, after nearly two decades of churning up laughs, Tyler Perry announced his plan to retire the character in 2019 after the film A Madea Family Funeral. Originally citing the news to CNN, Perry said, “I’ll be 50 this year and I’m just at a place in my life where this next 50 I want to do things differently,” he said. “This character has been amazing. So many people have loved her. It’s been a great franchise.” It’s no secret that while Tyler Perry puts time and dedication into the popular comedic act, he is also renowned for his other jobs as an actor and filmmaker on other projects.
However, it seems that the timely gloom and doom that rocked the world with the emergency of the pandemic had a part in reviving the character. Recently, Perry spoke out about a desperate need for “big belly laughs” in the pandemic era. “I was looking at the state of the world and how polarized it is… nobody’s laughing. Nobody’s getting the chance to belly-laugh anymore. And I’m like, what tool do I have in my arsenal that can bring that kind of laughter?”
