Jack Reacher is coming back to the screen and this time around we are about to get a character much more in line with the original book series. The dude is huge, confident, and has more of a presence on the screen than what we saw with the movie adaptations over the last few years. And in the first look at the new series, there’s for sure a sense that this version of Jack Reacher has no problem matching violence with even more violence. This, again, is much like what we saw in the novel series of the same name.
In the first clip from Reacher, the titular character has been put undercover in a prison, hoping to extract some information from a witness. But as often happens with Jack Reacher, and what we are sure to see many times, is the dude just attracting the fury and ire of ne’er-do-wells. That’s very much the case here with a fight going down in the prison bathroom between him and seemingly an entire cell block of dudes trying to kill him. This is just what it’s like to be Jack Reacher, a lightning rod of turmoil. Check it out:
This version of Jack Reacher, very much unlike the Tom Cruise version we’ve seen on the big screen for a couple of movies, has a physical presence the show is clearly trying to play up. The guy is just enormous, almost towering over even these other dudes he’s fighting in the prison scene. Both versions were tough of course, that’s the general gestalt with the Jack Reacher character, but series star Alan Ritchson is just a much bigger dude than Tom Cruise. And it’s clear the series creators wanted there not to be much overlap in how they looked, giving the character a full update. It looks like it totally works, the distancing of physical traits likely giving the series a leg up.
Reacher is based on the Jack Reacher novel series by Lee Child and will debut on Amazon Prime Video on February 4th. Besides just this clip of the main character kicking ass, there are other reasons to expect it to be a worth adaptation of the source material. For starters, Nick Santora is on as series creator and showrunner after having worked on The Sopranos, Law & Order, Prison Break, and The Fugitive. Malcolm Goodwin (iZombie), Bruce McGill (Collateral), and Kristin Kreuk (Beauty and the Beast) help to round out the cast.
The Jack Reacher book series encompasses 25 novels over the last 25 years and there is a 26th book coming later this year. The Amazon series will start with an adaption of the first book, The Killing Floor, which came out all the way back in 1997. In that story, Reacher is ex-military, but now something of a drifter who ends up in a small town and is accused of murder. It isn’t clear just how far this new series is going to take that angle, but they have said they are adapting it from the first book.
