Did you think that Amazon was going to keep calling their new Lord of the Rings series by that name? Then you weren’t alone. It was getting a little worrisome there for a while. Elijah Wood, who played Frodo in the Peter Jackson films, called the titling situation “bizarre“. After all, the new series is taking place in the Second Age. That’s one of the few things we’ve known for sure about Amazon’s upcoming series. And that means it doesn’t take place in the same time period where Frodo was traveling to Mordor. It happens way, way, way sooner. Amazon wasn’t super clear on whether they intended to change the name of their series, and now we know the answer: They kind of are. The official title of Amazon’s upcoming series is Lord of the Rings: The Rings Of Power. This announcement also came with a release date. We’ll be able to visit the Second Age on Amazon Prime streaming on September 2, 2022.
They made this announcement with a video full of special effects created to spark the interest of fans of the Lord of the Rings movies, and clearly, it has worked. The title announcement video shows the rings of power being forged, with a narrator voice that sounds like it could be hinting at Galadriel. See the one-minute video announcement below.
The dramatic new title video doesn’t really tell us a lot about The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The footage doesn’t appear to be the kind of special effects or image we’ll actually be seeing in the new series. Fans of Tolkein’s work are fairly well informed on wide-ranging source material. The author gave a lot of info on events within Frodo’s world. However, showrunners J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay wisely chose the Second Age, a period only briefly covered by Tolkein. This gives them a lot of freedom for where they can take the story without having to stay true to the books. For a TV series, that may be the best way to go.
J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay briefly addressed why they chose The Rings of Power as their title. For one thing, they said they thought it would look great on the spine of an epic fantasy novel. Fair enough. They elaborated to say, “The Rings of Power unites all the major stories of Middle-earth’s Second Age: the forging of the rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, the epic tale of Númenor, and the Last Alliance of Elves and Men.”
Lord of the Rings, the movie series, focuses on the one ring to rule them all. The Rings of Power is going to focus on all of the rings. This is further enforced by the voiceover in the video. The narrator is reciting Tolkein’s epigraph, where he outlines the rings and their usages. The narrator, who really does seem to be Galadriel, cuts off before she says the lines about how there are is one ring to rule them all. Why? Because that isn’t this story. We’ve seen that one already.
September 2, 2022, seems like a very long time away, but this official release announcement means that fans are now free to start getting excited about first looks. Hopefully, it will only be months before audiences get a real trailer, where they start to show some of the characters we’ll follow in the tale of the Second Age.
