The Sound Of Cylons Is An Ode To Battlestar Galactica’s Gaius Baltar
Here’s something you may not know about folk duo Simon & Garfunkel: they were way ahead of their time. So far ahead, in fact, that in spite of the fact that Glen A. Larson’s original Battlestar Galactica didn’t air until 1978, the pair recorded a tender tribute to the remake of that show that was even further into the future. How did they do it? How did they get the footage to compile this music video? Has Art Garfunkel been bogarting the secrets to time travel for 50-plus years? Sadly, the answers to these questions remain elusive. On the upside, however, this is a pretty awesome video.
All joking aside, major props must be given to whoever came up with the idea to turn Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” into “The Sound of Cylons.” It’s such an obvious pun that I’m surprised I haven’t seen anybody riff on it before. But this vid goes beyond the obvious joke and manages to really nail it thanks to a decent vocal impersonation of the singers, not to mention some deft lyric writing. I’d love to name check and/or link to the creators, but so far I can’t find a trace of who actually made the video. It’s been uploaded to YouTube by somebody using the handle of “Saul Tigh,” but I doubt the video enlisted the considerable talents of Michael Hogan.
There’s also something kind of awesome about putting a BSG spin on a popular song from the ’60s…since the series itself used a popular song from the ’60s (see below) as a major plot point. All of this has happened before, and all of this will happen again…
