Jim Carrey, easily one of the world’s most renowned actors and comedians, celebrated a milestone birthday turning 60 yesterday. As a titan on Hollywood’s comedy scene, Carrey has been bringing grins to the faces of moviegoers for nearly four centuries. And even though the Canadian native has limited his famously offbeat roles in the last decade, the Ace Ventura star once again proved to his fans via Twitter that the king of comedy still knows how to turn heads, even if apparently no one understood the meaning of his hilarious birthday gag.

While plenty of fans and celebrities took to social media to send well wishes to Jim Carrey on his 60th trip around the sun, the man himself surprised Twitter last night with the freakishly fitting video. The enigmatic actor even took cues from his long list of characters, showing that even at 60, the Dumb and Dumber alumni has impeccable control over his expressive and elastic face–something the comedian is best known for implementing into his roles.
However, there was a bigger reference being made here that most missed. With the birthday gag instantly going viral, fans and celebrities took to the comment section to congratulate Jim Carrey, and resonate with the effect that his slapstick style still has an impact on comedy in film today. Most users had no idea that the birthday video was actually a throwback joke from nearly 20 years ago.
During one of Jim Carrey’s numerous appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman in 2004, Carrey appeared with an unusual buzzed head. When asked the reason from Dave, Carrey replied in a manner only fitting of the Bruce Almighty actor. Amusingly saying the buzz was in order to reinvent his look, he calls himself the “Madonna of comedy”. With Dave and the crowd eating it up, Jim goes on to say he wants to be able to look at himself one day and say, “I’m 60 and sexy,” all while giving those quirky faces only Jim can pull off. Jim Carrey first entered Hollywood in the early 1980s through various small gigs. After landing a gig on the sketch comedy television series In Living Color in 1990, the young comedian began building momentum before landing not one, but three breakthrough comedic roles in 1994 via Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. Building a strong reputation for his distinguished capers in comedy, Carrey’s fame landed him plenty of comedic roles throughout the late 1990s up through today, including hits like The Mask, Liar Liar, and Bruce Almighty.
While comedic typecasts are obviously Jim Carrey’s forte, the 60-year-old has also proven his worth in other roles. Carrey gained widespread acclaim for showing his more dramatic side in films like The Truman Show and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. The latter is often lauded as one of Carrey’s most significant roles ever, even earning him a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role and another Golden Globe Award.
While Carrey seems to have retreated from the spotlight in recent years, he is still as significant as ever with no signs of retiring. Most recently, the comedian has lent his skills to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, and will once again reprise the role of Doctor Eggman in the upcoming film, Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Likewise, the actor just lent his toned-down smooth voice to pop artist Abel Tesfay, otherwise known as The Weeknd. Carrey was a narrator throughout the album.
