Showtime’s thriller TV series, Yellowjackets, may not have a hefty elite cast, but thanks to its unique story, unexpected twists, and impressive performances, the series has risen up as one of the network’s best shows. As per the data shared by Nielson and Showtime, the series drew a whopping 4 million viewers via its first five episodes of Season 1. Given its immense popularity, Yellowjackets was renewed for Season 2 long before it aired its season finale. And already, there is an amazing new update for fans awaiting the upcoming season.
Recently, Showtime president of entertainment, Gary Levine, sat down for a chat with Vulture to discuss Yellowjackets’ success and its potential future. The chat soon veered towards the series getting a green light from the network for its next season back in December 2021. In response, Levine revealed big news for fans of Yellowjackets--they will be debuting Season 2 by the end of 2022 and more importantly, the network plans to churn out new seasons of the beloved show every year!
“We are working towards a premiere at the end of 2022. We’d love to stay on an annual cycle. I think our audiences deserve that, and I also think that when you have a show that has this kind of momentum, you don’t want to let it dissolve,” Levine shared. While a series promising to premiere its next season the very year it airs its previous season’s finale is surprising, it is understandable when it comes to Yellowjackets Season 2 seeing the massive viewership figures the Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson created drama brought in. During the chat, Levine shared that in the past, the network has often kept a show with a low viewership percentage just because it “had the buzz.”
Fortunately, Yellowjackets has both. It has a high viewership rating which only grew with each episode and is very popular for its unique plotline. Levine shared that in its first season, the series “grew every week,” was a hit on streaming, brought lots of sign-ups for their platform, and got a fresh critics rating of 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. “That, to us, is a home run. It scored on every level,” he shared. This explains why the network is so invested in debuting Yellowjackets Season 2 as soon as possible.
Given the success tasted by Season 1, Levine is now convinced that Yellowjackets won’t just get a Season 2–it has the potential for multiple seasons. While even the pitch of the show had left him “spellbound,” after the “very satisfying finale” of the first season, he has understood that it has dynamics they can write about “forever.”
“The finale is a very satisfying finale, but it leaves lots of runway. Yes, the show is sort of high concept, but it is also a character piece about the dynamics between characters when they’re tested, both in the wilderness and in adulthood. You can write those kinds of dynamics forever,” Levine explained. He added that the future of Yellowjackets beyond Season 2 doesn’t depend on finding an answering to one secret as they show has “many secrets, many surprises, and a real human dimension that has longevity built into it.”
While Yellowjackets Season 2’s cast is yet to be officially confirmed, it is expected that the existing cast (apart from those who didn’t perish in the chaos of Season 1) will be returning to reprise their roles. Season 1’s ensemble cast featured Sophie Nelisse, Sammi Hanratty, Melanie Lynsky, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, Christina Ricci, Ella Purnell, Courtney Eaton, Peter Gadiot, Steven Krueger, and Warren Kole. Currently, Season 2 doesn’t have an official release date, hopefully, Showtime will stick to its plans and debut it sometime by the end of 2022.
