Unless you’ve been living under a rock big enough to hide two krayt dragons, a sarlacc, and maybe that big thing in the asteroid that tried to eat the Millennium Falcon in Empire Strikes Back, then you know Danny Trejo of Machete fame made his Star Wars debut last week on episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett. Trejo plays a Rancor keeper deeply impressed by Boba Fett’s (Temuera Morrison) connection with the great beast. Well, over the weekend Trejo posted an awesome photo of himself alongside Morrison and the massive head of his Rancor.
Danny Trejo posted the photo to his own official twitter account. Trejo and Morrison smile at the camera, with their fists up playfully. Behind them is the massive head of the Rancor, looking a lot more menacing than he does in episode 3. Trejo celebrates his appearance in the caption, writing, “Machete finally made it into space, Star Wars!” You can see the post below.
While he may be better known for more action-oriented parts like Machete, Danny Trejo’s played a wide variety of roles. Along with starring in From Dusk Till Dawn, Heat, Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, American Horror Stories, and The Flash, he’s voiced characters on Family Guy and King of the Hill, and even played a bartender on The Young and the Restless. But in 2020 it came out that there was one franchise Trejo was still desperate to get into — Star Wars. While working on the web-series Animal Talking, Trejo mentioned to the series’ creator Gary Whitta — who was also one of the writers of 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — that he wanted to be a part of The Mandalorian. Whitta promised to see what he could do, and apparently he kept his word. While The Book of Boba Fett isn’t The Mandalorian, starring on it has to be any Star Wars fan’s dream come true.
We don’t know yet whether or not Danny Trejo’s character will continue to appear in The Book of Boba Fett beyond episode 3, though there seems to be a decent chance. Back in October, rumors surfaced that the series would include Boba Fett riding a Rancor into battle. The fact that not only has a Rancor appeared on the series, but that Fett is already showing interest in learning to ride it, would imply the rumor wasn’t without merit. And if the beast is that important to Fett, keeping a Rancor keeper around might be a good idea.
Believe it or not — whether it was accidental or not — Danny Trejo’s role in The Book of Boba Fett has some parallels in his real life. As the actor shared with Dogster in 2016, Trejo is a passionate advocate for dog rescue. In fact, on the website for the Villalobos Rescue Center — the same center seen on Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls and Parolees — they tell the story of Danny Trejo and his then wife Debbie Shreve chasing down a truck driven by two men who were being abusive to the pit bull in the truck bed. They since adopted the dog and named it Trejo.
Once you know all of that, it’s tough to not think about what Danny Trejo’s character tells Boba Fett about Rancor. He says, in spite of how they’re thought of, Rancor are “quite peaceful, unless threatened.” He even says they can be “very loving,” which sounds exactly like what you might say to some who thinks Pit Bulls are all violent.
We should know soon enough whether or not Danny Trejo’s time on The Book of Boba Fett will go past episode 3. The next episode premieres Wednesday on Disney+. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more of Machete and the as-of-yet unnamed Rancor.
