After years of speculation about who would make their way into the cast for Spider-Man: No Way Home, we were finally given a treat of a movie that ended up as a culmination to not just the Tom Holland arc, but to the Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire stories as well. It really was a feat of cinema, tying together all different iterations of the web-slinger into one story that worked on almost every level. Fans were rightfully excited about the proceedings which brought all three live-action Peter Parkers on to the screen at once. And fans weren’t the only ones pumped up about it. The actors themselves clearly had a great time with it, so much so that they snuck into a theater just to see how the crowds would react to the big reveals.
Both Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire apparently went to see Spider-Man: No Way Home together on opening night, sneaking into a theater with ball caps and masks to remain anonymous. They were there specifically to see how the crowd would react when it was revealed that they both had come through the portals from Doctor Strange’s spell. The two had originally planned to only stay through when they first come on the big screen but decided to just stay for the whole thing. Check out them leaving the theater that evening:
While it was largely assumed that both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield would be a part of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the studio and the actors themselves were able to keep the lid mostly on it leading into the premiere. Considering the size and scope of the production, and just what it meant to get different iterations of the character on screen at once, it was no small thing to keep it mostly under wraps. We knew the Multiverse was going to bring back other villains from earlier movies with guys like Willem Dafoe, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, and others reprising their parts. But the Peter Parkers weren’t always a certainty. That being said, when it actually happened, we were treated to movie gold.
The addition of the Multiverse to the Marvel Cinematic Universe was the main mechanism in getting Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield back into the mix as their respective Spider-Man characters. And No Way Home did a fantastic job of calling back to each of their stories, giving some closure to their arcs that we didn’t necessarily get the first time around. Besides just the compensation, it’s clear they both enjoyed their time in the suit, showing to the theater together was just the icing on the cake.
With Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield, Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to smash box office records. With another $33 million over the course of last weekend, the flick is over $1.5 billion worldwide since its release on December 17th. That’s good enough to rank it 8th all-time though in the Marvel Universe it’s still sitting a ways behind Avengers Infinity War and Endgame.
