While Emma Watson is deeply known for her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter series, she has also appeared in many more films, some of which have some great reception. One such film is The Bling Ring, which is currently streaming on Netflix. However, the film is set to be leaving the streaming platform on January 17th. Fans of Emma Watson and her work will have a week left to watch it. The film was written and directed by Sofia Cappola. Sofia is the daughter of famed filmmaker Francis Ford Cappola. Sofia is a renowned filmmaker in her own right and has directed The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation. She won an Academy Award for the script of Lost in Translation.
The Bling Ring is a film that was born from an article by Nancy Jo Sales called The Suspects Wore Louboutins. The article was about a real-life group of teenage girls who were essentially a gang known as the Bling Ring. They were obsessed with celebrities, so much so, they tracked their whereabouts and movements so they could then burgle their homes when they were out. The article had the makings of a great film and that is exactly what Sofia Cappola saw as she took to writing and directing the film adaptation. The film stars Katie Chang, Israel Broussard, Emma Watson, Taissa Farmiga, and Claire Julien. Seeing this cavalcade of women stealing from celebrities sounds like it could be quite exciting.
Emma Watson plays Nicollete “Nicki” Moore, a character that was based on Alexis Neiers. She was the only actor in the film that had a known resume, as Sofia Cappola decided to cast unknown and younger actors in this film. The Bling Ring opened in the Un Certain Regard category for the Cannes Film Festival. Not a bad place to be in its initial reveal to the world. Even though it had opened in Cannes, it currently holds a 60% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a very poor 20% audience rating. That is not necessarily the numbers that fans want to see when wanting to check out work from a favorite actor, but the hearsay reception for the movie has been a lot more positive. The film has one more week left on Netflix, so there is plenty of time to see it for yourself.
The Bling Ring only achieved $20 million in its box office numbers, which makes sense considering the film was likely meant to remain as a pure independent film. Emma Watson was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the International Online Cinema Awards, Indiana Film Journalist Association Awards, and the Village Voice Film Poll. Even though the Rotten Tomatoes and box office numbers sound as if the film was a flop, it sounds like the reception of the film has been overlooked. The plot alone sounds as if the film would be worth a watch while it remains on Netflix for a week more.
Emma Watson, as previously mentioned, established herself as a brilliant actor from her time in the Harry Potter films. Those films ended in 2011, and Watson went on to play one of the main roles in Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is a film based on a book that was both written by Stephen Chbosky. That film was released in 2012. A mere year later, she would go on to play Nikki in The Bling Ring. Both of those films followed her time in Harry Potter, and that was Watson’s first time appearing in something that didn’t have to do with wizardry. Perks of Being a Wallflower was much more well-received.
The last film in which Emma Watson has appeared was 2019’s Little Women, where she played Meg March. Other than that, her film career has gone a bit quieter. However, she has recently appeared in the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary Special, where the cast of the films got back together and discussed their time creating one of the most storied franchises in film history. The special is currently streaming on HBO Max. The Bling Ring is one of the rare times in which fans of Watson can see her be something other than Hermione Granger, so check it out on Netflix before it leaves the streaming service on January 17th.
