Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or Doctor Strange 2 has gone through some significant changes in its production. Initially, Scott Derrickson was set to direct the sequel for Marvel, but he ultimately left for creative differences. Then, much-maligned director Sam Raimi stepped in. Raimi hasn’t been a part of Marvel or superhero films since he wrapped up the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy. Raimi entered and began to rightfully handle reshoots, among other things. One of the biggest changes is the redesigned look for the new villain, Mordo.
Fans of Doctor Strange will immediately recognize Mordo, as he appeared in the first installment. Now, he returns as the main villain for Doctor Strange 2, and with a brand new look. Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to reprise his role, but the character has now been redesigned, for the better. The biggest difference is in the hair. Mordo had short and trimmed hair in the initial film, but now he is sporting long hair and braids. That, and he also has been gifted a much more intricately designed robe. Although the color pallet has stayed the same with sort-of forest green, the robe itself looks a lot fancier. This could be symbolic as Mordo might be a much more powerful wizard this time around.
Doctor Strange 2 is going to see a much more powerful Mordo, now removed from believing in the Ancient One. Mordo has essentially stopped believing in what the Ancient One and Masters of the Mystic Arts stands for, and will likely be battling Doctor Strange throughout the film, attempting to sway Strange to his side of thinking. One thing is for sure, wizard versus wizard battles should be quite epic.
Doctor Strange 2 is going to be heavily involved with the multiverse, as the initial trailer has revealed. Doctor Strange appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, as he created a spell for Peter Parker that would essentially remove everyone’s memory of him and his role as Spider-Man. However, the spell went awry and created a big multiverse that went a little crazy, hence the Doctor Strange sequel’s name. Now with WandaVision, Loki, and Spider-Man all painting a much clearer picture of the multiverse, Strange will now have to right his wrongs, with the help of Wanda Maximoff it seems.
Mordo will enter Doctor Strange 2 as a possible catalyst that convinces Strange of the power of the multiverse and how to harness it for their own means, or the creator of the evil Doctor Strange. Either way, there is a lot at stake in the trailer for the new film. The trailer has Mordo saying, “your desecration of reality will not go unpunished.” This could mean that Mordo is also sent in to stop Strange from whatever he has planned or to punish him for unleashing the multiverse on the world. He also says, “I hope you understand the greatest threat to our universe, is you.” Strange might be the most powerful and most dangerous wizard that is now undone reality in a way that can’t just simply be undone.
Mordo looks amazing in the redesign and the trailer for Doctor Strange 2 also looks to be just as exciting. We will all find out how it all works together on May 6, 2022.
