With the way the Star Wars universe is trending these days, long gone are the times when we would simply have to sit and wait for another trilogy of movies to come along to deal with stories. Now, with the proliferation of the franchise in series form on Disney+, the opportunity exists to take a look more closely at individual stories and characters. There are a number of examples coming soon. But now it appears one little-used character might get a story of her own. That would be Captain Phasma who we first met in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The author Delilah S. Dawson is promoting a new book in the Star Wars universe called Star Wars Phasma. The book gives the backstory of the character and how she came to rise within the Stormtrooper ranks of the First Order. While working to promote the book following the release of The Book of Boba Fett, Dawson took to Twitter to let everyone know about the book but that she also has a script and pitch in hand about Captain Phasma. Considering how Star Wars is handling stories these days, especially around intriguing characters, a standalone film or series about the character kind of makes a lot of sense. Check out some of what she had to say.
We first met Captain Phasma in Star Wars: arThe Force of Awakens and was played in the role by Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones fame. Though we never see the character outside of the metallic-chrome armor, she is an intimidating force within the Force Order. Between the armor and her towering premise, the character offers a unique figure within the universe, a powerful female who has risen to a higher status within the antagonist ranks. Though the casting was exciting at the time, Captain Phasma didn’t get a ton of screen time and then appeared to die in a fight with John Boyega’s Finn near the end of The Last Jedi.
But you can see that Dawson is positing that this wasn’t actually the end of the character. In fact, according to her book Captain Phasma survived the fall into the pit of fire because of the armor. Dawson seems to be intimating that Phasma is wearing Beskar Armor, the same worn by the Mandalorians. But it’s been oft-reported that within the context of the Star Wars movies, this isn’t actually the case. Part of the canon is that her armor is made out of parts of the Emperor’s space yacht. But because this is all fictional anyway, changing a detail like that after the fact would likely upset only a small portion of the fanbase.
Whether we ever get a standalone series or movie around Captain Phasma remains to be seen. Though Dawson says she has a script ready, there are no immediate plans to make that happen in the short-term. But because of how many stories are coming to this world, really anything is possible. Heck, we just got the aforementioned The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian is gearing up for a third season. Plus Rosario Dawson is starring in Ahsoka and there will be series around Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader. It would seem the possibilities are nearly endless, even for smaller characters in the franchise.
