When it comes to huge, blockbuster movies, it’s never too early for the studio and executives to start thinking about the next flick in a budding franchise. These days, those conversations tend to start well in advance of the actual first movie hitting the big screen. Such is the nature of the business now with big-name stars and studios wanting to lay out a clear plan for the future well in advance. We are starting to see that with Black Adam 2 which apparently is already in development. There are plans to grow that Dwayne Johnson story as well as some of the other new characters we will meet in the movie.
Hiram Garcia, the President of Production for Seven Bucks Productions sat down with Collider to talk about a range of topics, most of them having to do with Dwayne Johnson-led movies. It makes sense considering Seven Bucks is the studio Johnson founded. The interview got into all aspects of the movie-making cycle and where different productions were along certain timelines. When the topic of Black Adam 2 came up Garcia was pretty definitive in his stance that they were working actively on the sequel. Check out part of what he had to say following a question about whether the sequel was in the works:
“100%, yeah. Like I said, as our job, it’s always to be ready to have that when the fans want it…So we 100% have plans and visions for a storyline that we would love to do with this character as well as we’re planning how we’re going to roll out the other characters within this universe…”
Garcia doesn’t really mix words about the plans for Black Adam 2 and really why should he? Without being able to see the future, it’s hard to imagine a world in which Dwayne Johnson and company don’t crush it with this first movie. The hype train is already rolling down the track and some early looks at the film give the sense that it will be a pretty dark and violent take on the character. That’s something Dwayne Johnson seems like he’s really leaned into considering what he posted at times during production.
And Garcia also mentioned a Hollywood truth about Dwayne Johnson and how popular he is at the moment. Essentially, Garcia said that nearly everything that Johnson does, studios want a sequel. Once they have him locked into one story, the goal is to keep pumping movies out no matter what. Seven Bucks and company don’t necessarily say yes to everything, but the offers are always there. One would have to assume this was the case with Black Adam 2 as well and the hero could end up becoming one of the biggest DC has to offer.
In addition to Black Adam 2, Garcia also mentions building out stories with the other characters who will come into play with this first film. While he doesn’t mention them by name, we are set to meet the Justice Society of America in this film, the group Black Adam eventually joins. There will be Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, and Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone. Either we could be looking at a Justice Society of America series or movie, or individual projects for members of this crew. There’s a lot on the table here.
Before we get Black Adam 2, we of course need to get the first Black Adam. That is set to release next summer on July 29th. It will likely be a blockbuster’s blockbuster considering Dwayne Johnson is in the lead and it’s introducing a whole new character to the DC Extended Universe.
