Fans of the new Dune adaptation will be happy to know that Rebecca Furguson was kind enough to show off some behind-the-scenes still shot of a deleted scene from the film. The image shows Ferguson with a knife to Timothee Chalamet’s throat in what looks to be a sort of training exercise. For those who have seen the film, they know that Ferguson plays Lady Jessica Atreides, the mother of Paul. At the beginning of the film, she trains Paul to use a sort of telepathic power that allows the user to infect the mind of the other. This knife to his throat could be part of that exercise to stop the user from being “mind dominated.”
This still image of Timothee Chalamet and Ferguson shows the pair being close to one another in a sort of defensive stance, with a dagger being placed at his throat. What could be happening is Paul’s mother showing him how to defend against the would-be assassin. Ferguson currently has nearly 530,000 followers on her Instagram and the still image in question has amassed 44,000 likes so far. One comment reads, “YES WE NEED IT”, meaning that the fan wants to see every bit of this deleted scene to eventually be released. You can see the image below.
Dune was released in theaters and HBO Max on October 22, 2021. The reboot has been highly regarded as a success and has already been greenlit for part two, which is likely to be released sometime in 2023. Timothee Chalamet is set to return in the main role of Paul. Whether or not he is able to control his powers further has yet to be revealed, though there could be some more training exercises to be explored in the future.
The deleted scene could be part of the training that Paul (Timothee Chalamet) must endure as part of the trials that the Bene Gesserit have to put him through, as Paul is meant to be the messiah of this religious group that his mother is also a part of. It is possible that Jessica and Paul must battle one another as a deeper look at these trials. So far, Paul was meant to endure a sort of torture to test his resolve. Maybe having to battle his own mother could have been part of this. The world of Dune is that of rich backstory that hasn’t yet been fully explained.
The knife to Paul’s throat could also be part of the telekinetic mind dominator power in which he must compel his mother not to kill him. Though that sounds a bit extreme, that could be what Jessica needs to do in order to fully train her son in the ways of the religious order that they are both a part of. Paul has been tortured after all. Either way, both Timothee Chalamet as Paul and Rebecca Ferguson as Jessica are set to return in Dune 2.
Dune fans can speculate all they want from this still image. Fan theories sometimes hit the nail on the head, and anyone can guess what Timothee Chalamet is having to do in this given scene. Seeing some martial arts with a knife would be welcomed in a sci-fi film.
