Sarah Jessica Parker Just Broke An Impressive Record

It’s been over 17 years since the final episode of Sex and the City aired on HBO, and over a decade since the last movie of the franchise — 2010’s Sex and the City 2 — hit theaters. But rather than being tired of the franchise Sarah Jessica Parker first starred in back in 1998, absence has just made the hearts of fans grow fonder. The premiere of the new sequel series And Just Like That… is breaking records.
According to Deadline, HBO Max is reporting that the inaugural episode of And Just Like That… performed better in its first 24 hours than any other HBO or HBO Max series premiere on the streamer. The new Sarah Jessica Parker series actually ranks in the top ten of all HBO and Max originals, including movies and series. Deadline also notes that And Just Like That… has also become the HBO Max “first view” champ — meaning that, more than any other HBO Max title, And Just Like That… has proven to be the first thing new subscribers watch on the streamer.
The success of the new series is also apparently stoking interest in the original. HBO Max reports that Sex and the City viewership on the streamer went up 59% since the sequel series’ premiere. Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis star in both series, though one of the big differences this time around is the absence of Kim Cattrall.
In 2017, rumors emerged that Cattrall was the reason for Sex and the City 3 not moving forward. People reported unnamed sources claimed Cattrall was making “outrageous demands” to appear in the film, including insisting that Warner Bros. take on other projects she had in development. Cattrall denied the claims, and it was around this time that New York Post‘s Paula Froelich outlined what she called the “mean-girls culture” behind the scenes of Sex and the City. She claimed that Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis were cruel to Cattrall during the series’ production because at the time Cattrall was the most well-known face on the show and its only “bona fide movie star.”
As controversial as the feud between Kim Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker proved to be, it promises to pale in comparison to what’s on the way. Last week, two women came forward to make sexual assault allegations against Chris Noth who has played Mr. Big in all of Sexy and the City‘s iterations, including the films. Noth vehemently denied the accusations, saying the encounters were consensual. Soon, a third victim came forward alleging that Noth assaulted her in 2010. Actress Zoe Lister-Jones — who appeared on a 2005 episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent alongside Noth — said the actor “sniffed” her neck in-between takes and whispered to her “You smell good.” She also claimed he hid a beer bottle he would drink from between takes, and that when she worked at a night club Noth owned, he was regularly “sexually inappropriate” with a female promoter.
So far, there’s been no comment from Sarah Jessica Parker or from any of the stars of And Just Like That… about the accusations. In fact, when Kristin Davis appeared on a recent episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, the subject was notably avoided, and even the subject of the series itself was barely touched on. So far, it hasn’t seemed to hurt And Just Like That‘s popularity, that’s for sure.
