Netflix Fan-Favorite Show Is Cancelled After Year Long Wait

Netflix has canceled its Julie and the Phantoms series after just one season. The decision comes just three months after its debut and is slightly puzzling since the series was well-received by viewers and critics. With catchy tunes and just the right amount of ghost jokes, Julie and the Phantoms is a fun, feel-good series for the whole family. It even scored an approval rating of 93% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Following the Netflix show’s cancellation, director and choreographer Kenny Ortega took to social media to thank everyone who supported the show.
Kenny Ortega told fans about the cancellation, letting his followers know that Netflix will not be picking up Julie and the Phantoms for a second season. He said although his heart is saddened, the team will move on with pride for what they have accomplished. Ortega added that besides creating a fun show, they also built a family while working together. The director told fans he hopes they will continue to support the Julie and the Phantoms team as they move forward with their work and careers beyond the Netflix show.
Created by Dan Cross and David Hoge, Julie and the Phantoms was first released on Netflix in September 2020. The musical comedy-drama is based on the Brazilian television series Julie e os Fantasmas. Cross and Hoge also served as showrunners and executive producers, with George Salinas and Jaime Aymerich of Crossover Entertainment as well as Michel Tikhomiroff and Fabio Danesi for Mixer Entertainment (via Deadline).
The ill-fated Netflix show told the story of Julie, a high school student who lost her passion for music after her mom died the year before. But when the ghosts of three dreamy musicians from 1995 suddenly appear in her mom’s old music studio, Julie feels her own inner spirit begin to reawaken. That’s when she is inspired to start singing and writing songs again. As their friendship with Julie grows, the boys convince her to create a new band called Julie and the Phantoms.
The Netflix series stars Madison Reyes as Julie Molina alongside, Charlie Gillespie, Jeremy Shada, and Owen Patrick Joyner who star as the ghosts of dead rockers Luke, Reggie, and Alex respectively. The cast also features Jadah Marie as Julie’s best friend Flynn, Sacha Carlson Nick as Julie’s initial crush, Savannah May as Julie’s nemesis Carrie, Cheyenne Jackson as jazzy ghost Caleb, with nefarious intentions. Carlos Ponce stars as Julie’s father Ray. And Booboo Stewart appears as Willie, another ghost who strikes up a romance with Alex.
Interestingly, the first season of Julie and the Phantoms won Best Musical Moment at the 2021 MTV Movie and TV Awards. The musical show also picked up three Daytime Emmy Awards. This included Outstanding Original Song for Unsaid Emily, Outstanding Costume Design, and Multiple Camera Editing. Unfortunately, these prizes weren’t enough to earn the show a second season on the streaming service. While there won’t be a season two, all nine episodes are currently available to stream on Netflix.
