Star Trek's most famous Vulcan is in a new trailer!

It isn’t Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, or even Ethan Peck of the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but nevertheless Spock is back. The Vulcan introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series appears in a new trailer that dropped last week. But rather than giving us a peek at a new movie or TV series, the trailer gives us our first look at Star Trek: Resurgence — a single player PC and console game due for release next year.
Early in the Star Trek: Resurgence trailer, it’s clear — judging by the characters’ grey uniforms — the story is set in the Next Generation film era of the franchise. Spock makes his appearance in the second half of the trailer, warning that the “prospect for peace” is endangered by whatever ordeal the heroes are facing. You can watch the trailer below.
As most Star Trek fans know, due to the longer natural lives of Vulcans, it makes perfect sense that Spock is still alive in this era. In fact, Leonard Nimoy guest starred as Spock in season 5 of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the two-parter “Unification.” He’s alive and well in the prime Trek timeline until he finds himself in the Kelvin Timeline in 2009’s Star Trek.
The official Star Trek: Resurgence site narrows down the game’s place in the timeline. According to the FAQ, Resurgence takes place in 2380. That puts it a year after the events of the final TNG feature film, 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis, and the same year as the beginning of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks.
According to StarTrek.com, in Resurgence players will experience the story through two characters — First Officer Jara Rydek and Engineering Crewperson Carter Diaz from the U.S.S. Resolute. While the story of Resurgence is a new one, it sounds fairly familiar to anyone who knows with the franchise. The crew of the Resolute will be trying to solve a mystery to stop two powerful civilizations from going to war. Through a combination of action and dialogue choices, players will determine how the tale unfolds.
Resurgence is being developed by Dramatic Labs, which is made up of Telltale Games alum. Before the company went under in 2018, the developers created a number of engrossing games known for posing players with difficult decisions. Telltale developed games for a number of popular properties before shutting down, including The Walking Dead, Batman, Game of Thrones, CSI, and Guardians of the Galaxy.
With its focus on storytelling and decision-making, it may very well be that a Telltale-style adventure is precisely the way to replicate the experience of a Star Trek episode in a game. After all, while there have always been elements of action in the movies and TV series, Star Trek is ultimately about the decisions its characters make and not about which ship wins the big space fight. How many episodes of TNG have Worf urging Captain Picard to open fire, with Picard thanking the Klingon for his advice and ordering the exact opposite?
The trailer doesn’t offer a specific release date for Star Trek: Resurgence, though the game’s website says we should expect to see the game on sale in Spring 2022. Resurgence will be available for PC as well as on the Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, and PS4 gaming consoles.
