Recently, Variety interviewed several actors, specifically asking them about redemption arcs. Why do audiences love them? What makes a great redemption story versus a lackluster one? Of course, looking at current redemption arcs on screen, there are few better qualified to ask than Tom Hiddleston. While Loki has been an important and chaotic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, his new Disney+ series has given the character a lot more room for growth. He’s a character that audiences are now hoping to see make great strides in personal development, but while still remaining true to his character. Tom Hiddleston recognizes this and explained his approach and excitement for what will happen in Loki season 2.
Here’s what Tom Hiddleston had to say about Loki’s upcoming development in season 2.
I understand the audience sees good in Loki — they want him to get past his internal and external obstacles. They want him to repair that relationship with his brother and step into the hero that he can be … He realizes, ‘Actually, I can choose my path and choose to do the right thing. Or I choose, at least, not to repeat the same old tricks that I repeated over and over in a cycle of trust and betrayal.’ It’s exciting to retain all the characteristics that makes Loki, Loki, and at the same time to play slightly different music within him.
Tom Hiddleston Speaking to Variety
It sounds like Tom Hiddleston recognizes that as much as fans want to see Loki resolve all his personal issues and find happiness and peace, they never want to see the character stop being true to himself. There’s a push and pull balance where audiences want to root for the character and his redemption arc, without losing important sides to Loki’s character. He’s a trickster. He’s mischievous. As he redeems himself, what will it look like? How will he stay himself while making these changes into who he wants to be?
It’s interesting to see that after a decade in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Tom Hiddleston knows that he must push Loki to grow, but keep that core mischievous side. Will Loki ever be a hero? Possibly, but it’s doubtful he’ll be one like his brother. He’ll always have his core personality traits that make him such a hit with Marvel audiences.
Tom Hiddleston sounds protective of his character and mindful of his growth journey. After so much with the character, it’s easy for audiences to believe that they’ll be watching Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. That’s more true now than in the past, with Loki season 2 on the way. However, while receiving an award for his portrayal of the character, the actor casually mentioned that he knows how lucky he is and recognizes that he won’t be able to play the character forever. This scared some fans. It almost sounded like he was planning his Marvel exit. However, that seems unlikely right now. It seems more likely that he knows it won’t last, and that this knowledge helps drive him to make sure the character’s legacy stays great.
Fans waiting to see Tom Hiddleston explore this ongoing redemption arc have a while to wait yet. There’s no word on when Loki season 2 will release, though there has been some concern about delays. Speculation has pointed at late 2022 or early 2023. The show is going on though, at least for one more season. Hopefully, Loki will appear in more Marvel Cinematic Universe movies along the way as well.
