Even though we are just a month away from the highly-anticipated release of Scream 5, details about the film are rather sparse. Though its plotline and major twists are being fiercely guarded, makers of the film have thankfully not left Scream fans high and dry. A final poster for the next installment has been released and it drops a hint for its biggest secret: the shocking identity of the deranged killed, Ghostface.
Revealed by IGN, the final poster of Scream 5 shows twelve characters from the film, looking all kinds of concerned, afraid, determined, and suspicious–the usual theme of the films under the franchise. And looming over them is the threat that will terrify them throughout the story: Ghostface. But what will leave you scratching your head in confusion is the caption at the bottom of the poster. It read, “The killer is on this poster.”
While it doesn’t really narrow down the number of potential suspects in Scream 5, it does establish that the killer won’t be someone apart from the characters seen in the poster. So, all we have to do is keep an eye on all these characters while trying to not jump out of our seats whenever Ghostface shows up. Easy peasy, right?
For now, all we know about the new Ghostface is that they seem to have upgraded their murderous “tactics.” A recently released TV spot for the upcoming Scream 5 presented Ghostface getting on with their usual killing spree but this time, they are wearing a metallic mask and are armed with a flamethrower. Also, the film’s brief synopsis has teased that the killer will be resurrecting Woodsboro’s bloody history of brutal murders by targeting the town’s teenagers.
Previously, another poster for the Scream sequel, featuring Ghostface holding their iconic Buck 120 knife glistening with the blood, teased the identity of the cold-hearted killer by highlighting that the face behind the mask is “Always Someone You Know.” In the past, Sidney Prescott’s boyfriend Billy Loomis and Stu Macher were revealed as the killers in the first Scream film, Sidney’s close friend Micket Altieri in Scream 2, her half-brother Roman Bridger in Scream 3, while her cousin Jill Roberts was seen as the knife-wielding murderer in Scream 4. Looks like Scream 5 will continue the franchise’s tradition of rather deadly betrayals.
The cast of Scream 5 includes David Arquette as Dewey Riley, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott, Marley Shelton as Judy Hicks, and Roger L. Jackson as the iconic voice of Ghostface. Apart from the above-mentioned actors returning to reprise their respective characters from the past films, the film will also see Melissa Barrera, Dylan Minnette, Mikey Madison, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Sonia Ben Ammar, and Kyle Gallner. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the film is based on a screenplay by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. James Vanderbilt, Chad Villella, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak have joined the project as producers while Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter of Scream 4, is serving as an executive producer. The film is currently scheduled to open across theaters on January 14, 2022.
