Supergirl Fans Are Furious With The Show Over The Season Finale
Supergirl fans are not happy about the Supergirl finale!

After six seasons, the CW aired the series finale of Supergirl. Storylines were resolved and the two-part finale saw a wedding and several characters make their return. Fans, however, are furious over one major omission. Many viewers were desperately hoping to see Supergirl/Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) and Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) share a kiss or at least express their romantic love for each other and it didn’t happen.
This coupling, dubbed by the fandom as Supercorp (Lena works for the family-company Luther Corp) has been simmering since Lena was introduced as Lex Luthor’s brother in Season 2. Although they’ve never been explicitly stated as love interests, many shippers felt that some of their scenes had explicitly romantic undertones. Some viewers felt like the writers were queerbaiting them, and they feel unsatisfied that the writers labeled them as “just friends.” On the plus side, there is plenty of fan art of the pair, and Benoist and McGrath themselves have acknowledged the community. They even have signed art depicting the couple for fans on multiple occasions.
Regardless, many fans are going to feel slighted when queer-coded characters they love don’t get any resolution. This also isn’t the first time the LGTBQ+ community felt slighted by the show. In an earlier episode, Supergirl fell into the trope of killing off the explicitly queer character Lexa. This trope, colloquially known as “Bury Your Gays” often paints homosexual characters as more expendable than heterosexual characters.
The Supercorp fan community definitely has reasons to feel justified in their ship. The aforementioned romantically-coded dialogue played a big part. Another example is an episode where Lena filled Kara’s office with flowers, which would seem like a romantic gesture to most people. There were also multiple episodes that showed how important the two were to each other, along with alternate-universe episodes showing them with completely different personalities.
That being said, credit where credit is due. Supergirl definitely has more queer representation than your average TV series. Two queer relationships were depicted throughout the course of the show, one being the pairing of Alex Danvers (Kara’s adoptive sister) and Kelly Olsen and the other being Brainiac 5 and Nia Nal. But those who were wishing for an official confirmation of the Supercorp pairing will be unfortunately out of luck.
With the series finale, the relationship of Kara Danvers and Lena Luthor is canonically, just friends. But if you’re a fan of the Supercorp pairing, you can see your headcanon come to life by checking out the fan art community. Many Supergirl fans have already taken to Twitter, sending out art depictions of the two kissing in the finale. There was even an alleged set photo released of the two characters kissing, causing “Supercorp Kissed” to trend on Twitter. The photo has yet to be confirmed by the CW. For Supercorp shippers, this might be the best confirmation you get.
The Supergirl finale aired on November 9th. The show depicted the adventures of Kara Danvers aka Supergirl as she protected the people of National City and learned to embrace her Kryptonian powers.
