Sonic the Hedgehog gained a cult following in the 1990s and has since sold over 140 million units, grossing over $6 billion as of 2020. This includes both packaged and digital formats. The popular Sega game is centered around Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with supersonic speed, typically on a quest to defeat the villainous Doctor Robotnik (played by Jim Carrey in the movies). Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega’s flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video games of all time.
The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie (featuring Jim Carrey) premiered in early 2020 after being delayed due to fans’ dissatisfaction with the character’s initial design. Despite the setback, it became one of the most successful releases of that year, earning $319.7 million worldwide. It also became the highest-grossing video game film adaptation of all time in North America.
Sonic the Hedgehog captured the essence of the game and followed the blue speedster as he navigated the complexities of life on Earth. Along with his newfound human friend, small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski, Sonic finds himself in a whirlwind adventure to recover his magic rings and prevent Doctor Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from using his immense powers for world domination.
Following the success of the first movie, and with plans for a film series, the studio announced a follow-up in May 2020. Filming began this year in Vancouver and Hawaii from March to June. Producers include Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno. See Jim Carrey and company in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 when it is set for release on April 8, 2022, by Paramount Pictures.
