Channing Tatum’s upcoming film, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, just got its leading lady role, a Primetime Emmy Award-winning actress, Thandiwe Newton — known for her work in Solo: A Star Wars Story and the Westworld television series. Details regarding Newton’s role and the entire film are still scarce, but it goes without saying that everyone involved will surely benefit from working with an actress of her caliber.
According to Deadline, Thandiwe Newton, who was previously negotiating a role in the upcoming film, has joined Channing Tatum in Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third installment in the twerk-filled cinematic series. While she’s set to assume a leading role in the film, details about the role itself are still scarce. The actress is known for appearing in box-office-leveling hits such as 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness and 2009’s science fiction disaster film, 2012. She’s perhaps also known for her portrayal of Meave Millay in HBO’s science fiction western series Westworld — which is set to return to HBO in 2022. In 2018, she played Val in Solo: A Star Wars story, partnered up with Woody Harrelson’s character.
Channing Tatum will also return to the Warner Bros. cinematic franchise as Mike Lane, the film’s leading male role. In the original movie, which is loosely based on Channing Tatum’s own stripping experience, Mike is living paycheck to paycheck as a gig worker, working mostly as a handyman and a car detailer. But, come night, Mike removes his day-job costume and becomes the head honcho in an all-male revenue. Enter a new performer and inexperienced young stripper nicknamed the Kid, who falls under Mike’s tutelage. However, things get heated up for Mike when he develops feelings for Kid’s sister, as he has to balance his demanding work life with his budding romance.
As we previously stated, Magic Mike was loosely based on Tatum’s own experience before his breakaway acting career. The film was an instant success, having garnered $167 million at the box office, opposing a mere $7 million budget. When the 2015’s follow-up came out, it added to the original’s earnings, combining to a grand total of almost $300 million. The cinematic releases starring Channing Tatum were so popular that they spawned a Magic Mike Live — a live-production performance in Las Vegas, written by the original film’s writer, Reid Carolin.
The live-action performance was a massive success. So much, in fact, that it birthed offshoots in London, Berlin, and Australia before announcing that it will turn into a traveling show, debuting on April 2022. In addition to the upcoming film and the live show, HBO announced a competition series, Finding Magic Mike, which will follow several men journeying to rediscover their sex appeal in a face-off to determine who the real Mike is. Finding Magic Mike is set to premiere on HBO Max this December.
Besides appearing next to Channing Tatum in the upcoming Magic Mike film, Thandiwe Newton, who received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, is also currently working on Westworld’s Season 4, which is being anxiously anticipated by the fandom of the series.
