Brendan Fraser is having a late-career resurgence that is seeing the one-time A-lister taking some oddball roles in a variety of comic book-related productions. It’s totally working and is putting the actor back in the limelight again. We are completely here for it. And recently, Fraser was on the set of his upcoming film Batgirl that will have him taking a villain turn. But before they got started, there were some birthday wishes in order for Brendan Fraser.
Batgirl director Adil El Arbi posted on his Instagram account a picture of him and co-director and collaborator Bilall Fallah presenting a birthday cake to Brendan Fraser for the latter’s first day on set. Fraser, for his part, looks more than happy to be there. Though the smiles and sheepish grins might not last too long for the actor considering the part he is going to play in the film. It looks like it is going to be a good one. Check out Brendan Fraser on set and see the touching birthday presentation they make for him. The dude is clearly moved by it.
It may be that Brendan Fraser is already in costume here on the set of Batgirl. In the movie, he is going to be playing Firefly, a crazy pyromaniac who uses fire to deadly ends. While the character, in the comics, has taken a number of different forms, we could get a stripped-down version in this movie especially if they are leaning into a grittier side of the spectrum. It could be a welding apron he’s wearing here and if his character is working in high heat scenarios, then this get-up would make a lot of sense. Firefly uses fire but also lights and pyrotechnics to commit crimes. It looks Brendan Fraser will play the Garfield Lynns version of the character.
Brendan Fraser as Firefly will join the cast of Batgirl which has Leslie Grace playing the main character. It is unclear if the film will be an origin story for Barbara Gordon/ Batgirl in this film, though it should have certain continuity with the original DC Extended Universe because JK Simmons is along for the ride reprising his role of Commissioner Gordon.
And this DC turn by Brendan Fraser isn’t his only comic book role right now. He’s also starring in Doom Patrol on HBO Max. He versions of Cliff Steele/ Robotman, a former race car driver who is now a cyborg. After suffering a horrible accident, the dude is now a husk of metal. Fraser plays the past version of the character and voices him as well. Though the character looks like a hulking metal mass, he’s actually extremely powerful with Fraser able to bring a warmth to the character which wouldn’t seem possible when you first catch sight of him.
It will be a bit before we are able to catch Brendan Fraser in Batgirl. The movie isn’t set to hit screens until sometime next year. Filming just got underway and isn’t likely to wrap before the end of the year. Fraser is also set to have a role in Martin Scorcese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jesse Plemons, and Al Pacino among many others.
