Paramount+ is offering a good selection of new animated films on its streaming platform this holiday season. Among them is Rumble, set in a city where monster wrestling is the most dominant sport in the world and every monster that dwells in that world are superstar wrestlers. That is except for the red monster and amateur wrestler named Steve, voiced by Will Arnett. Paramount released a trailer Friday where he works his way up to body-slamming another monster.
In Rumble, the city of Stoker has fallen to economic ruin, and a new monster wrestling champion must rise to bring it back to prosperity. That monster is none other than Will Arnett’s Steve, a lovable underdog who is a very inexperienced wrestler. But that all changes when aspiring teenage monster wrestling trainer Winnie, voiced by Blockers‘ Geraldine Viswanathan, begins coaching him to be the champion he’s meant to be — through dance. See how he brings down the house with his combined wrestling and tango moves in the trailer below.
Will Arnett’s latest animated fare is based on the graphic novel Monster on the Hill by Ron Harell, and is directed by Hamish Grieve, who also wrote the screenplay along with Matt Lieberman. It’s also one of those films that suffered one delay after another thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Collider, it was originally set to release in theaters in July 2020, but Paramount pushed it back to January 2021 and then to May before deciding to forgo a theatrical release altogether in favor of streaming. That was despite subjecting Clifford the Big Red Dog and Paw Patrol: The Movie to the hybrid release model. Rumble is now set to stream exclusively on Paramount+ on December 15.
The film features a star-studded voice cast that includes Terry Crews, Ben Schwartz, Becky Lynch, Tony Danza, Bridgett Everett, and Charles Barkley. Since wrestling is the theme throughout, Paramount produced the film in collaboration with WWE Studios, as well as Reel FX and Walden Media. Tanya Giles, Chief Programming Officer at ViacomCBS, released the following statement: “We are thrilled to build on our recent success with family-friendly films and bring Rumble‘s entertaining underdog story to Paramount+ this holiday season.”
Steve may have something in common with Will Arnett’s other, more famous cartoon character, BoJack Horseman. Both of those characters loathe themselves because they can’t seem to overcome their insecurities. And they both need someone to cheer them on and believe in them even when they don’t believe in themselves. The stark contrast between the two, however, is that BoJack came from a place of privilege whereas Steve has to start all the way from the bottom.
A lot of people, kids and adults alike, feel like they don’t belong simply because they’re different from everyone else, which is especially true during the holidays. But with a movie like Rumble will be sure to cheer them up and give them the message that it’s OK to go through life by marching to the beat of their own drum. Or in Steve’s case, dancing to the beat of their own soundtrack.
