Star Wars Series Confirmed To Be Cancelled
Star Wars, as a franchise, is at an interesting point with plenty of new projects on the way. But one planned series has been canceled.

Last year, Disney made Star Wars fans everywhere beyond elated after it announced a big slate of projects set in the galaxy, far far away. But since then, the future of many of these ambitious announcements has been dicey, especially the Disney+ show Rangers of the New Republic. The spin-off series was supposed to center on Gina Carano’s character Cara Dune but since she was fired from all projects earlier this year, the chances of Rangers of the New Republic still being in the Star Wars pipeline seemed slim as well. And now, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has finally confirmed that the series has been canceled.
Kathleen Kennedy recently chatted with Empire Magazine about the future of the many Star Wars projects that were announced during The Walt Disney Company’s Investor Day last year. She revealed that Rangers of the New Republic has been shelved completely as work on the series never really progressed. Kennedy said that they had “never written any scripts or anything.” Though she refrained from commenting on Gina Carano’s departure, Kennedy assured that whatever material they did create for the show will not go to waste and will be instead used to shape future episodes of The Mandalorian.
Star Wars’ Rangers of the Republic would have seen a new side of Cara Dune, who became a New Republic Marshal in the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. After living years as a ruthless vigilante, she would now have been on the other side of the law, tasked with the responsibility to uphold it. While she would have continued to be a part of the existing Disney+ show and lead her own spin-off, Dune would have appeared in the other upcoming series as well, like The Book of Boba Fett. But apparently, Carano’s controversial tweets pushed Lucasfilm to scrap all the plans they had for her character, including the cancellation of Rangers of the Republic, which would have seen her first solo outing as the lead character.
Rangers of the Republic is not the only Star Wars project whose future has seemed bleak for quite some time now. It was recently reported that Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, the standalone Star Wars film which was being helmed by Patty Jenkins, has been delayed indefinitely. While the official reason is her busy schedule, former THR editor Matthew Belloni (via Puck News) revealed that Rogue Squadron has been delayed due to creative differences between Jenkins and Lucasfilm executives, including senior V.P. Michelle Rejwan. With films like Cleopatra and Wonder Woman 3 on her plate, it remains to be seen whether Jenkins would be willing to compromise her creative freedom and return to the Star Wars project later.
While Rangers of the New Republic appears to have been canceled for good, other Star Wars projects (apart from the Patty Jenkins’ film) are moving forward for the time being. Filming of Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett and Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi have wrapped up while The Mandalorian Season 3 recently began production. Other projects like Star Wars: Lando, Star Wars: Acolyte, and Star Wars: Ahsoka, etc are also proceeding as expected. Thus, barring any future complications, even without Rangers of the Republic, we have a hefty list of Star Wars shows to look forward to!
