The Crow celebrated its 27th anniversary this year. So naturally, some stills for director F. Javier Gutierrez’s now-defunct remake of the film found their way online too. Now, thanks to Australian filmmaker Ryan Unicomb, fans got a look at Jason Momoa’s original test footage from Corin Hardy’s more recent attempt to bring James O’Barr’s beloved graphic novel to life.
Unicomb shared the two clips of Jason Momoa on social media after stills from The Crow remake started circulating online. “Apparently people are frothing over some still pics of Jason Momoa’s The Crow test footage. So here’s some of the actual footage. Hope they get the chance to revisit this one day,” he wrote.
The filmmaker followed up with a second clip of Jason Momoa, saying, “Here’s the rest of the footage. There’s always been some confusion around if it’s from before he was cast or not. I’ve personally never been able to confirm but perhaps @corinhardy can?!”
Dubbed as a supernatural dark fantasy comic book series, The Crow was created by James Barr as a means of dealing with the death of his fiancée at the hands of a drunk driver. It was first published by Caliber Comics in 1989. It became an underground success and was later adapted into a film starring Brandon Lee in 1994. The movie received glowing reviews, with critics praising its tone, visuals, cinematography, production design, and Lee’s performance.
Following its success, countless filmmakers and actors have toyed with various remakes of The Crow. But the closest the project has come to gaining any real traction was when Jason Momoa was tapped to star in Corin Hardy’s reboot. Unfortunately, Momoa and Hardy abandoned the film in 2018. The reason for ditching the project was reportedly due to financial and creative differences with Davis Films who own the movie rights to the original comic books.
However, this wasn’t the only difficulty the production faced. Originally set to hit theaters in 2019, The Crow reboot had been in development since 2009. Sadly, the Jason Momoa starrer was hit with various obstacles since the beginning, including Relativity Media filing for bankruptcy. The project also saw a plethora of directors come and go, like Hardy, Javier Gutierrez, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, and Stephen Norrington.
After leaving the project, Jason Momoa shared a heartfelt statement on Instagram (via CBR) saying, “I’ve waited 8 years to play this dream role. I love you @corinhardy and @sonypictures. Unfortunately, I may have to wait 8 more. Not our team. But I swear I will. James O’Barr sorry to let you down I won’t on the next. This film needs to be set free. And to the fans. Sorry. I can’t play anything but what this film deserves and it needs love. I’m ready when it’s right.”
Jason Momoa became a household name after landing the role of a lifetime as DC superhero Aquaman. The 2018 film grossed more than $1 billion, making it the only DC film to reach that number, aside from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. The story followed Arthur Curry/Aquaman who sets out to lead the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and stop his half-brother, King Orm, from uniting the seven underwater kingdoms to destroy the surface world.
While there are no official plot details for Aquaman and The Lost Kindom, James Wan is set to resume directing duties with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick returning to pen the script. Wan is also producing alongside Peter Safran. Production on the project began in July this year.
The film will see Jason Momoa reprising his role as Arthur Curry/Aquaman alongside Amber Heard as Mera and Patrick Wilson back as Orm. Other returning cast members include Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta as well as Willem Dafoe, Nicole Kidman, and Dolph Lundgren. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is scheduled for release on December 16, 2022.
