For more than a year now, there have been constant rumors of Charlie Cox’s return as Daredevil, which includes his highly speculated return in the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. While his role is still very much debatable, Marvel Studios seems to have given a big sign that Vincent D’Onofrio‘s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin from the canceled Netflix series will be soon making his way back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Hawkeye.
One eagle-eyed MCU fan has pointed out on Twitter the sly Daredevil Easter Egg that Hawkeye carries in its first episode. In the episode, titled “Never Meet Your Heroes,” we see Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop attending an elite party at a hotel where she gets tangled up in an underground black market auction. For those who didn’t recognize the hotel, it is the same location that featured heavily in Season 3 of Daredevil. Check out the post below:
This luxury hotel was seen as the Presidential Hotel in the Netflix series and was used to relocate the villainous William Fisk a.k.a. Kingpin as per the deal he made with the FBI. They were protecting him in exchange for his testimony. This could simply be an Easter Egg by Marvel for the ardent fans of Daredevil or it could be a subtle sign that MCU fans should get ready for the imminent arrival of the cunning Kingpin in Hawkeye.
This Easter egg in Hawkeye is only the latest addition to the long line of rumors that have been swirling around the potential return of characters introduced by Daredevil. Of course, it is the “leaks” hinting at Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock’s return that are taking the giant’s share of the spotlight. Recently, a leaked photo from the sets of the film seemingly confirmed that Tom Holland’s Peter Parker will be aided by Cox’s Daredevil. The image showed Charlie Cox sitting at a table with Holland, Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan, and Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May. While it could be a doctored photo, interestingly its background fits the appearance of Parker’s apartment in the official trailer.
While we are waiting with bated breath for Cox’s return as Daredevil in Spider-Man 3, there have also been rumors that his character will be playing a significant role in the upcoming Hawkeye spin-off show, Echo. Maya Lopez a.k.a. Echo (who is the “adopted” daughter of Kingpin) was introduced in the second episode of the Disney+ series as the first big threat Clint Barton and Kate Bishop will be facing. According to insider Daniel Richtman, Daredevil and most of the show’s main cast will be playing a big part in the upcoming series. He has asserted that while Echo will remain Alaqua Cox’s show, it will be used as a platform to softly reboot the selected Daredevil characters into the MCU.
With Netflix’s hold over certain Marvel characters now over, some are folding into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These folks built up quite a storyline, Daredevil included, on the streamer had a solid fanbase. And seeing the constant rumors around the return of the series’ characters as well as the Easter Egg in Hawkeye looks like the avid fan following it garnered may actually lead to its revival.
