We live in an odd world. It’s one in which folks can offer infinite opinions on the internet but also those opinions can run you afoul of the masses in the wrong circumstances. That’s what happened to Seth Rogen on a holiday weekend when he rang in on someone else getting his car robbed. And it went, well, poorly. It started “innocently” enough, but devolved into an internet mess that got Rogen trending for “defending” the city he lives in. This is one where it really feels like there is no winner.
It all started when Casey Neistat, an incredibly popular YouTuber and internet personality, tweeted out on Wednesday about his car being robbed. Ok, maybe no big deal. These kinds of things happen, right? Well, Neistat also took the opportunity to, maybe rightfully, take down the city of Los Angeles in the fallout. He had a few choice words to say about the city and this, ultimately, is what rubbed Seth Rogen the wrong way. Check it out:
Ok, so this starts out innocently enough. There was a robbery, and someone is pissed off. This mostly makes sense and it’s even easier to get upset with an outcome when there are possibly some other problems in the city to begin with. But then Seth Rogen came in from the sidelines to defend the city and maybe even the robbery itself with his comment. This is when things started to go a bit off the rails.
It’s this back and forth that got Seth Rogen trending when it was all said and done. And I suppose it opens up something of an interesting debate or dialogue about the ideas of community and property. There are conflicting pieces of lifestyle at play here, or at least differences in perceptions around what is okay when living in larger cities. Rogen is clearly saying this is the cost of doing business when living in a place in Los Angeles. Maybe the expectation should be that your things will disappear because that’s just the way of things.
This second part, maybe what Seth Rogen is talking about, is that the defensive and emotional backlash to things being taken is an overreaction because that isn’t how we should treat possessions. Maybe nothing should ever be so important to us that losing it is a real problem. But Casey Neistat clearly sees things differently in this respect. Even choosing to live in a place shouldn’t necessarily mean signing up for having possessions be lost because of theft. There has to be a certain modicum of trust along these lines.
When he isn’t arguing about the vagaries of the Los Angeles property rights scenes, Seth Rogen is plenty busy these days. On the acting side, he’s about to star in Pam & Tommy about the sex tape that shocked the world. Rogen plays the dude who nicked it to start. On the production side, he’s working on all kinds of nostalgic pieces with reboots of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well as Darkwing Duck.
