Today, Tyra Banks is mostly known as a reality television star. In the year 2000, she was one of the bartending dancers in Coyote Ugly. The movie starred Piper Perabo as Violet Sanford, a girl who wanted to become a songwriter, but didn’t want to get on the stage and sing her songs herself. It was a romantic comedy set in a New York City saloon where the bartenders were all women who danced on the bar between serving drinks. It did all right at the box office. Critics really didn’t enjoy it. Today, fans rewatch it when revisiting those early 2000 movies, and that may be part of why Tyra Banks is set on a Coyote Ugly reboot.
Piper Perabo revealed the plans during a recent interview with The Talk (via ET Canada). “I can’t say everything about what’s going on,” said Perabo, however, she added, “Tyra wants to do it. So when Tyra gets something in her head, you can’t really shake it loose. So she is pushing and she is pushing with all her might.”
Piper Perabo didn’t share what role Tyra Banks wants to play in the Coyote Ugly reboot. She has worked as a producer for many years. The way she’s working to get the project moving forward would suggest she might be looking to take on that role. While the wording of what Piper Perabo said indicated the story would be a reboot, there’s room for it to be a sequel that takes place in the same world instead of just a reimagining of the original film.
At the end of the first movie, Violet Sanford got her happy ending. The sequel wouldn’t need to center on her, but could instead focus on the bar. In that case, Tyra Banks could also reprise her former role in a new Coyote Ugly reboot. In the original movie, Maria Bello played Lil, the woman who ran the Coyote Ugly bar and looked after her employees. It would be possible for Zoe (Tyra Banks) to now be taking on that role. She’s recently been seen on Dancing With The Stars, so she’s clearly still down for the bar dancing from the original movie.
The original Coyote Ugly movie was inspired by a GQ article originally published in 1997. The Muse of the Coyote Ugly Saloon was written by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author now known for writing Eat, Pray, Love. She wrote the story based on her own experiences of working at the real-life Coyote Ugly saloon. Critics reviewed the first Tyra Banks film harshly. One review said that the movie was an excuse to show “hot, sexy women dancing on a bar”. Today, remakes are fairly common. When they’re done on fan-favorites, they’re often met with groans of frustration. It sounds like Tyra Banks is determined to take a movie that didn’t do well at the time, has earned some fans over the years, and give it a modern remake. If Piper Perabo is right, it sounds like it’s bound to happen sooner rather than later.
