The Three Musketeers Is Being Retold In Two New Movies With A Surprising Cast
Now, the popular tale will be reimagined for the big screen once more. Film distributor Pathé has revealed the release date for The Three Musketeers which will be told over two films.

The story of The Three Musketeers dates back to 1844 when French author Alexandre Dumas introduced readers to the swashbuckler genre, which has heroic, chivalrous swordsmen who fight for justice. Over the years his book has been adapted for the big and small screen numerous times. Now, the popular tale will be reimagined for the big screen once more. Film distributor Pathé has revealed the release date for The Three Musketeers which will be told over two films. The Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan and The Three Musketeers – Milady will be released in France and Switzerland in 2023 on April 5th and December 13th respectively.
The studio also announced the cast and revealed the promotional posters for The Three Musketeers movies. The cast is led by François Civil as D’Artagnan, Eva Green as Milady DeWinter and Vincent Cassel as Athos. They are joined by Romain Duris as Aramis and Pio Marmaï as Porthos. Louis Garrel will also star as King Louis XIII alongside Vicky Krieps as Queen Anne of Austria. Interestingly, The Three Musketeers will also be introducing a new character to the story. Hannibal will be played by Ralph Amoussou and is based on the true story of Louis Anniaba, the first Black musketeer in history. With this new ally come familiar enemies. Eric Ruf will appear as Cardinal Richelieu and Marc Barbé will take on the role of Captain de Tréville.
Jacob Fortune-Lloyd (of The Queen’s Gambit fame) will portray the Duke of Buckingham. He is taking over for Oliver Jackson-Cohen whose casting in The Three Musketeers was announced in February this year. Patrick Mille appears as The Count of Chalais, as well as rising French stars Lyna Khoudri as Constance Bonacieux, and Julien Frison as Gaston de France. The Three Musketeers films will be directed by Martin Bourboulon. It is based on a script by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière. The movies are produced by Dimitri Rassam’s banner Chapter 2 and Ardavan Safaee at Pathé.
Production on The Three Musketeers – D’Artagnan and The Three Musketeers – Milady began in September. Filming is taking place in prestigious French landmarks like the Louvre Palace, the Hôtel des Invalides, the Castles of Fontainebleau, and Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Fort la Latte, and Chantilly, as well as the citadel of Saint-Malo and the historic city center of Troyes (via Variety).
The new cast and character for the latest adaptation of The Three Musketeers will definitely draw audiences further into the intriguing world of sword fights and adventure created by Alexandre Dumas all those years ago. Set between 1625 and 1628, the novel tells the story of a young man named D’Artagnan, who leaves home to travel to Paris, hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Although he is unable to join the elite corps, he is befriended by three of the most formidable musketeers of the era – Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. Along with The Three Musketeers, he becomes involved in affairs of state and at court.
