After weeks of speculation inspired by previously leaked information, Warner Bros. has finally officially announced MuliVersus – a new Super Smash Bros.-inspired platform fighter game. Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, Bugs Bunny, Arya Stark, Tom and Jerry, and plenty of other characters from Warner Bros.’ IPs will battle it out in the upcoming video game. MultiVersus is scheduled to release next year for gaming consoles and PC.

MultiVersus will support 1v1, 2v2, and 4-player free-for-all matches, set in the environments themed around the characters available in the game. This includes the Batcave and Jake and Finn’s Treefort. According to IGN, Warner Bros. and Player First Games have already revealed the character roster, albeit incomplete, with more characters to be announced before the game’s release date. Warner Bros.’ plans for the game include the post-release expansion of the character roster, similarly to how Nintendo handled Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which received its final character weeks ago. Apart from the previously mentioned Superman, Batman, Harley Quinn, and Bugs Bunny, Warner Bros. also included the meme-born Ultra Instinct Shaggy from Scooby-Doo.

Of course, each character has its own unique ability set, specifically designed to pair dynamically with other characters. Character customization will be available through load-outs, granting some gameplay variety, with characters skins for added visual expression, as well as emotes – pretty standard stuff in recent team-based games. MultiVersus will be released as a free-to-play game, and as such, it will be supported by in-game purchases and microtransactions – which have become major revenue generators in the gaming industry since 2011. Warner Bros. still hasn’t revealed what those in-game purchases and microtransactions would contain; if the game assumes a content-filled season-based format, like many games of its genre, it’s sensible to expect additional cosmetics and more characters each season.

One of the most enticing features of MultiVersus would be cross-play and cross-progression support across all of its supported platforms, including Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, the increasingly difficult-to-obtain PS5, and its more available older brother PlayStation 4, as well as PC via Steam. In addition, a dedicated server-based rollback netcode that helps reduce lags and disconnects will support the online gameplay throughout its life-cycle, which, if WB and Player First Games play their cards right, could last a considerable number of years. For example, Blizzard’s World of Warcraft continues to be one of the highest-ranking online games for more than 15 years now. That’s impressive.

Besides pitting Superman, Batmen, and Harly Quinn against each other, MultiVersus will also feature social events that allow you to challenge other players’ guilds and climb the leaderboards. Additionally, Player First Games will host playtests, and anyone interested can sign up to participate in them at the MultiVersus website. The game is scheduled to release sometime in 2022 and just at the right time for platform fighter enthusiasts. Given that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate won’t be adding any more content to their game, in terms of character roster expansion, there’s room for competition, as clearly evidenced by the rising popularity of the Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl game.
