It is Disney Plus Day for the streaming service which means an abundance of never before seen content. Disney has released information and everything up and coming. Fans can log onto their site and see new first looks for characters such as Moon Knight and She-Hulk. But that isn’t the only thing that they revealed. Among the most anticipated shows to come out will be the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. This will be the first time that Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen will reunite on-screen as master and apprentice. Of course, this timeline will take place after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. This means that Christensen will be donning the Darth Vadar helmet as Obi-Wan hides out on Tatooine. There is no official trailer as of yet, but fans can see concept art for what is to come.
One of the most contested pieces of art in the recent release is no doubt the alleged face-off between Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan Kenobi and his old apprentice Anakin Skywalker turned Darth Vadar. The Star Wars fandom has been critical of the new Disney direction of Star Wars and doesn’t have a strong reputation of being particularly supportive. The Star Wars fandom has been accused of being toxic in the past. With this new batch of information, fans react as expected. One Twitter user @jamezsofunny responded, “Disney is once again trampling over the original trilogy. Vader says to him in ANH ‘When I left you I was but the learner now I am the master’. He would definitely not be the learner by this time and would be significantly stronger than Kenobi. This is just fan service.” This is the consensus of most of the posts on Twitter, though some attempt to be more positive. “Obi v Vader fight would have to be a dream,” tweets @_einrib_.
Since the release of the most recent Star Wars saga, the fandom has been historically divided. Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi was largely criticized. In an article for Deadline, Director Rian Johnson has had to go on the record and defend his movie from the onslaught of fan outcry. Despite the negativity in the fandom, Ewan McGregor is largely beloved as Obi-Wan Kenobi. The prequels have seen a slight resurgence in recent years. Not because of the acting or dialogue, but the movies have become interesting and insightful. In an op-ed for Vox, Emily VanDerWerff discusses how politics in the films mirror current events.
No matter what fans feel about the upcoming show, Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are happy to be working together again. Christensen has been less prevalent because of the backlash against his portrayal of Anakin. But he will be more present in this Disney era of content. Christensen will also be appearing in the show Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson. Dawson shared her appreciation for Christensen in an Instagram post.
Ahsoka Tano originated in the Clone Wars series as Anakin’s apprentice. Her first live-action appearance was in The Mandalorian and now she is getting her own show. This relationship is a large part of the animated series and is finally getting respect. All Star Wars needs now is a live-action Ezra Bridger, and we can finally find out what happened to him after Rebels. Fans can see Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi again when the show airs in 2022.
