The space cowboy fans have another reason to be excited today as Netflix has finally dropped the first official trailer for the upcoming live-action Cowboy Bebop series. The two-and-a-half-minute-long trailer featuring our favorite bounty hunters highlights all the action-packed remnants of the original anime series that came out 24 years ago. With John Cho as Spike Spiegel, Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine, and Mustafa Shakir as Jet Black-the Cowboy Bebop trailer is jam-packed with everything we love about the series.

The Cowboy Bebop trailer opens with a brooding shot of Spike overlooking the futuristic city of New Tijuana. “They tried to kill me, Ana.” The opening scene for the trailer shows John Cho as Spike speaking with Ana (Tamara Tunie), the proprietor of an underground jazz club and one of the few people that truly know of Spike’s long and complicated past. As the somber jazz cuts out at the end of the scene, we hear Spike declare “I go by Spike Spiegel these days” as the music changes to the infamous “Tank!” theme song and the action ensues.
It is clear from the Cowboy Bebop trailer that the live-action adaptation will draw heavily from the original show’s source material. As one of the things that drew so much attention and admiration for the show, many fans were afraid Netflix would push a more traditional sci-fi style or even go too far towards the dark aspects of the show. But to most viewers’ delight, the trailer looks to highlight everything we loved about the original series. Many familiar scenes and faces are strewn throughout the trailer as well as we get a glimpse of some of the show’s most enamored villains, such as the teddy bomber and the clown serial killer, Mad Pierrot. We even were given a sneak peek at Spike’s ex-partner and arch-nemesis, Vicious. Getting to see Spike, Jet, and Faye work (and fight) with each other is reminiscent of the complex relationships and character development as seen in the original series.
Created by the Sunrise animation studio in Japan, Cowboy Bebop has long been considered one of the top critically acclaimed anime of all time. The show has been coined a space western, but in all reality Cowboy Bebop is a mashup of spaghetti westerns, neo-noir, samurai, classic westerns, and sci-fi. Set in the year 2071, the show follows the ragtag group of bounty hunters living and working together on the spaceship called the Bebop. John Cho’s Spike leads the crew across the galaxy in search of bounties as he simultaneously fights the demons of his past.
Other than the official Cowboy Bebop trailer, you can catch a glimpse of the madness that will surely ensue in the previously released material from Netflix including the show’s opening, and a short vignette called The Lost Sessions. The show will be available to stream on Netflix on November 19th. Until then, we will be rewatching John Cho and our favorite Corgi while hoping Netflix will stop trolling fans and confirm whether or not Ed will be in the live-action series.
