Actor and comedian T.J. Miller who plays Wade Wilson‘s best friend and bar owner Weasel in the Deadpool films has been relieved of the federal charge he has been facing for calling in a fake bomb threat more than three years ago. The case against him was dismissed by prosecutors in Connecticut on Thursday after the actor agreed to undergo a Cognitive Remediation program to ensure that such events don’t occur in the future.

Miller made the fake bomb threat on an Amtrak train in 2018 and was arrested at La Guardia Airport in New York after the incident, a few weeks before the second Deadpool film was released across theaters. Recently, during his appearance on the podcast The Tea with Dr. V (via Deadline), Miller shared it was the mental health challenges he was suffering from because of a congenital brain malformation that caused him to make the bomb threat. A few years ago, he underwent brain surgery to counter the worsening effects of the disorder, and “a golf ball-sized” piece of his frontal lobe was removed. As reported by Variety, prosecutors have shared that Miller’s brain surgery was a major reason the charges against the actor were dropped. Apparently, the continued neurological impacts of the same dilutes the force of his “intent” to commit the offense.

The Deadpool star has also agreed to financially reimburse the law enforcement for all the time, efforts, and resources they wasted in responding to his fake 911 call. Miller has also agreed to be a part of a Cognitive Remediation program that will effectively cancel out a high possibility of another such event happening in the future.

This was not the only controversy that T.J. Miller has courted in the past few years. In December of 2017, the actor was accused of sexual abuse by an anonymous woman. In an interview with The Daily Beast, the woman alleged that Miller had sexually assaulted her and had subjected her to physical violence while they both attended George Washington University. As Deadpool 2 was months away from release at the time, many speculated if Miller would remain in the sequel.

In a chat with Rotten Tomatoes, Lauren Shuler Donner, the producer of the Deadpool films, had shot down the rumors. As Deadpool 2 had already entered its final editing stage, it would have been too much trouble to reshoot all the scenes Miller was in with a different actor. Despite apprehensions about what Miller’s presence could do to the film’s success, Deadpool 2 was even more successful than its predecessor and grossed over $750 million globally. But this doesn’t mean that the Silicon Valley actor’s future is secure in the franchise.

At the time of the controversy, even though the third Deadpool film hadn’t been given the green light, it was fairly certain that it was indeed in the cards and Donner had explicitly stated that while they didn’t remove Miller from Deadpool 2, his presence in the future films depends upon the studio. Deadpool 3 is currently being planned and will commence filming in late 2022, so it will be some time before we get the confirmation whether Wade’s foul-mouthed bestie will be making an appearance in the film or not.
