Dom Toretto upholds family in the face of galactic kickback. Someone modded Vin Diesel into Star Wars: Battlefront II and the results are glorious. The Guardians of the Galaxy star is wielding Darth Maul’s double-bladed red lightsaber, cleaving through Stormtrooper after Stormtrooper in the ceaseless fight against declining family values. Star Wars is nothing without the Skywalkers’ winding tale of betrayal and tragedy, and it has finally attracted Dom Toretto to the cause. No one’s slicing anyone’s hands or stabbing them through the chest with Toretto on the move.
Reddit user RyZe26 uploaded the incriminating evidence of Dom Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) long-overdue rampage online. The character’s unofficial theme, “Bandoleros” by Don Omar and Tego Calderon from The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, is playing ominously in the background. Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto would have a field day refereeing the Jedi and the Sith. Star Wars is chockful of references to family, just not the best kind. The Skywalkers’ longstanding family drama forms the bulk of the narrative, a story intimately explored across nine blockbuster movies. Everything started out peachy; we’ve got a young boy named Anakin Skywalker, born to a slave at the height of the Galactic Republic, and he engages in pod racing to help support his family. When Shmi Skywalker Lars was brutally murdered by Tuskan raiders, her son avenged her post-mortem in an act of Sith-fueled rage and lovingly buried her at the Lars family’s moisture farm.
Unfortunately, Anakin’s duty to family ends there. He may have succumbed to the Dark Side to avert his wife Padmé Amidala’s death, but it was by his hand she later died during labor — the first of many ill-conceived family tragedies. Anakin’s Darth Vader persona soon set his sights on his twin children: he dubbed Princess Leia Organa an enemy of the Empire and sliced Luke Skywalker’s hand off in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. This undying cycle of deliberate misadventure was repeated years later with Kylo Ren, when he killed his father (Han Solo) to complete his turn to the Dark Side. No wonder Vin Diesel had to get involved.
But like Vin Diesel’s movies, Star Wars also offers hope in the face of personal treason. Though Anakin was the child of prophecy — preordained to either destroy the galaxy or save it — his son Luke was the Jedi destined to redeem him. The unlikely savior of the Jedi order used his final confrontation with Darth Vader to reach into his father’s stony heart, thoroughly convinced the man still possessed some good in him. His gamble paid off and Anakin proved his mettle by coming to Luke’s rescue and tossing Emperor Palpatine down a reactor shaft at the cost of his own life.
With the original prophecy fulfilled, father and son patched up, and Anakin became a Force ghost. The newer Star Wars shows on Disney+ have also capitalized on family to sell their pitch, like Din Djarin’s fatherly affection for young Grogu in The Mandalorian, elite clones remaining steadfastly loyal to their cause in The Bad Batch, and Cassian Andor’s love for the people that made him what he is in Andor. Reverence to family ultimately saved the galaxy, just like Vin Diesel’s Dom would have wanted.
The Fast & Furious franchise is a family epic disguised as a criminal operation; led by Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto, the movies’ motley crew of questionable heroes execute heists and spy on enemy territory to keep their budding family together. After all, a family born out of choice is just as potent as a family brought together by blood. Imagine Ocean’s with more family and less male bravado, and that’s Fast & Furious in a gist. The main cast of Star Wars would have fit in perfectly. It’s impossible to ignore the irony, however. Dom Toretto may be a stickler for family, but Vin Diesel may not be. The actor has been feuding with his Fast & Furious co-stars since forever and was described by Dwayne Johnson as unprofessional.
Fans of either franchise have been making dual Fast & Furious and Star Wars references in response to the rising surge of Dom Toretto family memes, and the interwebs couldn’t be more ecstatic. Modding Star Wars: Battlefront II is just the latest of these attempts to sweep the Web off its feet, with more to come very soon. Players have previously modded Darth Maul into a Mandalore form and added Asajj Ventress, Din Djarin, Darth Malgus, Captain Rex, and the 2020 iteration of Jango Fett to the mix. Vin Diesel could still reappear in another form, however; what say you about Groot massacring his way through a horde of Sith Lords in defense of his family? After all, the Guardians of the Galaxy is the only other cinematic family to rival the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the Avengers. Make it happen, Battlefront fans.
