Ghostbusters: Afterlife Trailer Teases A Major Return From The Original

With pandemic delays, the last time we really had something to say about Ghostbusters: Afterlife was four months ago, when we got a fun little teaser to remind us that the upcoming movie is still out there, waiting in the wings. After a long wait, they’ve finally come out with a two-minute trailer, telling the story for the new film and letting us know that yes, it is coming this November to theaters. This time around, the trailer shows the heart of what the movie is actually going to be about.

Did you notice the fun little bit at the end there? They show the old Ghostbusters ad on YouTube with the guys saying, “We’re ready to believe you!”, and then show a phone ringing in a shop. A very familiar voice then answers the phone and says, “We’re closed.” Bill Murray’s voice is familiar to many of us, not just from the original movies but from his long list of other projects over the years. Of course, we knew that he was involved in the project.
A few months ago, Bill Murray agreed to watch the teaser that showed Paul Rudd facing off against the mini stay-puft monsters in the grocery store. He did a reaction video for the teaser. While Bill Murray is going to be in Ghostbusters: Afterlife, he isn’t a central character, and as of three months ago hadn’t yet seen the entire film or been familiar with the mini monsters.
This new Ghostbusters movie promises a return to the original in more ways than one. While we’re going to be seeing new characters with their own story to tell, its feet are still firmly planted in the universe we know. This is established by bringing in characters like Bill Murray’s Dr. Peter Venkman and photos of the original group. Our main characters are family members of an original character and living in the house. Behind the scenes, they’re working to bring about that same magic by having talents like Dan Akroyd signed on as an executive producer. On top of all this, the movie was co-written by Jason Reitman and is being directed by him as well.
Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, the creator behind the original 1984 movie. Jason Reitman grew up in his father’s Ghostbusters legacy, and now he’s set to bring his own entry to the franchise.
While the new Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer leans heavily on nostalgia, Jason Reitman actually talks about the ways this story is different. The original movie is about people starting and running a business together in New York City. Afterlife is about a family that’s become disconnected, why that is, and bringing them together in a small town. The family is moving into Egon Spengler’s home (the kid’s grandfather) after his passing.
Of course, Egon Spengler was a smart character in the original movies, and he would have a reason for moving where he did. The family comes together as they explore why that was as they learn things like why the electricity is funky in the house and why the ground shakes in a town without fault lines. While the new movie is going to do its best to bring back the elements fans like, it is clearly working to become something brand new for audiences as well. We’ll see how that goes when Ghostbusters finally releases in theaters on November 11, 2021.
