Star Trek: Lower Decks Trailer Reveals The Return Of A Voyager Character
Star Trek: Lower Decks dropped a new Season 2 trailer. There's all the expected hijinks plus a return of a Voyager character
During San Diego Comic-Con, we got a look at Star Trek: Lower Decks, the mature cartoon that gives a refreshing taste of the long-standing franchise with its adult sense of humor.
Picking up where the first season ended, the new season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, will follow Jack Quaid‘s (The Boys) character Ensign Boimler on the U.S.S. Titan with his new promotion by his captain, William Riker, played by Jonathan Frakes (Picard, Insurrection, Generations, Nemesis). We will also catch up with Ensign Mariner, played by Tawny Newsome (Space Force), Rutherford, played by Eugene Cordero (Kong: Skull Island), and Tendi, played by Noël Wells (Master of None) on the U.S.S. Cerritos.
We will get to see Boimler handle his new status with William Riker. It will be an adjustment period as he does not have his friends for the time being, but we will surely get some kind of reunion for the crew in Star Trek: Lower Decks. Check out the new trailer:
We also have two special guests who will appear in the second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks. Veteran actors of the franchise Jeffrey Combs (Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise) and Robert Duncan McNeill (Voyager) will arrive. Combs will play as an evil computer, and McNeill reprises his iconic role as Lt. Tom Paris.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is created by Mike McMahan. If you thought the animation style looked familiar, that is because he worked on Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty. McMahan acted as the lead writer with Garrick Bernard (Solar Opposites), John Cochran (The Millers), Ben Joseph (Me, Myself, and I), Chris Kula (Onion Sportsdome), David Ihlenfeld (Family Guy), M. Willis (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power), Ben Rodgers (Workaholics), Ann Acacia Kim (High School Musical: The Musical), and David Wright (Family Guy).
The directors of Star Trek: Lower Decks consist of Juno John Lee (The Venture Bros.), Barry J. Kelly (The Venture Bros.), Bob Suarez (Big Mouth), and Kim Arndt (Solar Opposites).
During the panel, McMahan spoke about what to expect for season two of Star Trek: Lower Decks. He focused on who would be involved as well as balancing the tone between its humor and seriousness, both of which make it a great entry into the franchise.
“We left a lot of bills to pay with characters and with what was going on in the world. You know, we just keep at it. We were saying this earlier, but there is a really great mix of serious Trek and silly Trek,” creator Mike McMahan said. “Because if you’re on a Starfleet ship, you don’t know if you’re going to encounter the Jem’Hadar or a guy who traps you in a game, you know what I mean? You’ll see some familiar faces, you’ll see a lot of new stuff. The Cerritos goes through some real rigamarole. I’m just excited for August.”
Later, he gave a bit of a reveal for Star Trek: Lower Decks. The conflict seen in the first season with the Pakleds will return. Pakleds will act as the main antagonist, but instead of being tossed toward the end, it looks like this threat will persist and be a bit more in-depth while sticking to the show’s comedic personality.
“The Pakleds, we kind of treated a little bit like how the Klingons were in TOS or maybe the Romulans were in TNG, you know, kind of a big bad force that’s been growing, that’s out there that has to be dealt with,” McMahan said. “But remember, the Cerritos isn’t necessarily in charge of the big missions. So every once in a while, because they did encounter the Pakleds first, they do get involved in some stuff. But you’ll see the Titan kind of having to deal with more Pakled stuff.”
Sticking to animation like Star Trek: Lower Decks, we got a trailer for Prodigy. It will star Rylee Alazraqui (Summer Camp Island), Dee Bradley Baker (American Dad), Brett Gray (On My Block), Angus Imrie (The Crown), Jason Mantzoukas (Big Mouth), Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager), and Ella Purnell (Army of the Dead). While the two share the same universe and being cartoons, this will be a more family-friendly show that will premiere on Paramount+ this fall, and when it concludes, it will appear on Nickelodeon.
Star Trek: Lower Decks season two is hitting soon. It will hyperdrive itself over to Paramount+ on August 12 for 10 episodes, like its previous season. So, you have plenty of time to catch up on the first season.
