A Massive Netflix Prequel Series Just Started Filming
An awesome new prequel series has just started filming for Netflix.

While HBO is busy building its arsenal of Game of Thrones spinoff series, Netflix is not far behind in terms of amping up The Witcher franchise. Apart from the original series, we now have an upcoming animated film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and a limited prequel series, The Witcher: Blood Origin. Not only are we getting both The Witcher season 2 and The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf later this year, work has also begun on the prequel series as its filming is all set to commence in a few days.
As per a new report from Redanian Intelligence, the Netflix series The Witcher: Blood Origin is all set to delve deeper into the Witcher lore, as it is going to begin filming very soon in Iceland. Reportedly the cast and crew of the series have already arrived on location, including Laurence O’Fuarain whose recent Instagram stories confirm that the actor is indeed in Iceland. In accordance with the safety protocols in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, the cast and crew will begin production in early August after a short period of quarantine.
The Netflix prequel series is set to depict events that took place some 1200 years ago before the enthralling adventures of Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher: Blood Origin will serve as the origin story of the first Witcher ever and what really happened that caused the different worlds of monsters, men, and those of the elves to clash into one.
Vikings actor Laurence O’Fuarain will be leading the Netflix series in the role of a warrior named Fjall, who is carrying “a deep scar within,” and Michelle Yeoh has been cast as Scian, a sword elf who is the last remaining member of her nomadic tribe. Sophia Brown will be playing Elle, an elite warrior and the lead opposite O’Fuarain. Originally, actress Jodie Turner-Smith was cast to play the character but the date of the commencement of production caused scheduling conflicts and she had to leave the project thus leading to Brown’s casting.
The Netflix series has Declan de Barra serving as showrunner for the six episodes. He will also be executive producing the show along with The Witcher’s showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. Author of The Witcher books, Andrzej Sapkowski is also attached to The Witcher: Blood Origin as a consultant.
As mentioned above, The Witcher: Blood Origin is not the only project under the Witcher franchise. Last year, Netflix had also announced an animated spinoff film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. The film will be yet another origin story, this time of Geralt’s mentor and fellow witcher Vesemir. The voice cast for the film includes Theo James as Vesemir, Lara Pulver as Tetra, Graham McTavish as Deglan, and Mary McDonnell as Lady Zerbst. The film is directed by Kwang II Han, written by Beau DeMayo, and produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich. The film is currently slated to release on Netflix on August 23, 2021, before The Witcher season two, which recently wrapped production and is all set to release on the streamer on December 17, 2021.
