Transformers Crossover With Another Major Franchise Is Inevitable

With how crazy some crossovers can get, it leaves for an open door that can lead to all kinds of wild ideas being thrown together. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a producer for both Transformers and G.I. Joe movies, has weighed in on a possible crossover when speaking with Uproxx. It turns out it is “inevitable” that the giant robots in disguise will meet these soldiers.
The interview naturally transitioned from G.I. Joe to Transformers due to Bonaventura’s hands being in both. The interviewer, Mike Ryan, brought up a good question about the two joining together. There are comic books, so why not a movie? Apparently, the issue is Paramount. The studio is against molding two franchises into one, even if it is for one crossover event.
If others do it, then it might help make it happen for Transformers. There was the Jurassic Park and Fast and Furious hybrid that was mentioned earlier this year. As discussed in the interview, if two wildly different franchises can make it work, then it will allow others to attempt it too. Nobody was making cinematic universes on a large scale until Marvel made it work. Now, everything from the DC Extended Universe to the recent horror trilogy Fear Street is taking a stab at it. Studios move where the money is at.
The other reason the producer gave is that there are plenty of stories to tell. Snake Eyes is hitting this weekend, and more Transformers movies will continuously be made for the coming years. Once plots start to dwindle, then that might spark the inspiration for these two worlds to collide.
Steven Caple Jr. (Creed II) is directing the next installment with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts after the classic storyline. It turns out he is a fan of G.I. Joe too. Bonaventura tosses the idea out that if there is someone to do this, then they might have their man. First comes proving the franchise has the strength to deliver as it has dropped in quality and profits. It is possible that Caple’s take could turn around things for the robots that turn into various vehicles.
While Transformers needs to bake a little longer for its next entry, the latest for G.I. Joe is Snake Eyes. The movie is directed by Robert Shcwentke (R.I.P.D.) with writers Evan Spiliotopoulos (Beauty and the Beast), Joe Shrapnel (Race), and Anna Waterhouse (Race). It stars Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians), Andrew Koji (Warrior), Haruka Abe (Kiss Me First), and Samara Weaving (Ready or Not).
Caple Jr. will be joined by screenplay writer Joby Harold (Army of the Dead) for their Transformers movie. It will star Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Dominique Fishback (Judas and the Black Messiah), Luna Lauren Velez (Dexter), and Peter Cullen to reprise his role as Optimus Prime.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been producing Transformers movies since Michael Bay’s 2007 blockbuster. Since then, he has been attached to all of the entries. In 2009, he dived into G.I. Joe with Stephen Sommers’ (The Mummy) The Rise of Cobra.
