Post-credits scenes have become synonymous with superhero movies, giving viewers a sneak peek at what’s next for their favorite characters. Although these scenes have existed in popular cinema since 1966’s The Silencers, their popularity soared when Marvel’s Iron Man included a post-credits sequence that teased the Avengers initiative in 2008. Since then, they’ve become a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have appeared in most DC films too – like 2016’s Suicide Squad.
Now, with the release of James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad just a few weeks away, the film’s highly anticipated end sequence has reportedly been leaked. According to We’ve Got This Covered, there will be two post-credits scenes that leave the door open for further adventures.
The first Suicide Squad post-credits scene will see Weasel washing up on a beach after being presumed dead following an earlier action sequence. The second shows John Cena’s Peacemaker alive and well in a hospital bed after he appeared to be fatally wounded by Idris Elba’s Bloodsport. While Cena’s HBO Max series may be a prequel, surviving the movie leaves the door open for him to return in any future outings team may have in the present day too.
It’s worth noting that there has been no official word about the content of The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scenes. But James Gunn did confirm that the movie will feature at least one scene in the credits. The director revealed the news during a friendly exchange with fans on Twitter.
He was asked if The Suicide Squad would include an end-credits scene, and that was followed by a question about their origins. Gunn simply responded with a “yes” and went on to explain how they come into existence in his films. “In my movies, they’ve been things I’ve come up with, but that’s not always the case. I shot the post-credits sequence for Thor: The Dark World, which the studio asked me to do.”
The scene (or scenes) will most likely be used to set up new adventures for the surviving members of The Suicide Squad team in the DC Extended Universe. However, Gunn has often used them as a comedic tool rather than a franchise set-up. So fans could be treated to something really unique.
Directed and written by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad follows the imprisoned convicts of Belle Reve penitentiary who are sent as members of Task Force X to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy Jotunheim. The Nazi-era prison and laboratory held political prisoners and conducted experiments on them. But during their mission, the squad comes into conflict with Starro, a giant, telepathic alien starfish.
The Suicide Quad features an ensemble cast that includes Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Robert DuBois/Bloodsport, John Cena as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Sylvester Stallone as the voice of Nanaue/King Shark. Rounding out the cast are Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as George “Digger” Harkness /Captain Boomerang and, Peter Capaldi as Gaius Grieves /The Thinker.
The Suicide Squad will be released in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6th.
