There has been considerable hype around the upcoming Ridley Scott-directed historical drama, The Last Duel, as not only are Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reuniting on the big screen, they have also penned the screenplay for the film together. The last time this happened was 24 years ago when the best friends won the Oscar for the screenplay of Good Will Hunting. While it will be months before The Last Duel releases across theaters, if its recently released official trailer is anything to go by, Damon and Affleck have put together an impressive cinematic adaptation of a true story.

The Last Duel, based on author Eric Jager’s book, The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat, chronicle the story of the last officially sanctioned duel to the death in France. In the trailer, we see knight Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) going against his best friend, Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) and engaging in the duel after accusing the latter of raping his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges (Jodie Comer). Ben Affleck is seen as Count Pierre d’Alençon.

While Matt Damon’s Jean de Carrouges believes that he is risking his life to fight for the honor of his wife, she is quick to correct him: “You are risking my life so you can save your pride.” If he loses the duel, his wife will be painted as a false accuser and burned alive. But even as Marguerite is aware of the unfortunate truth- that the shine of truth pales when it encounters “the power of men”- she continues to stand by what is right.

The script of the film has been written by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, with assistance from screenwriter Nicole Holofcener. While Affleck was ecstatic about the prospect of reuniting with his friend for the film, the fact that The Last Duel is his first period-drama film scared the actor. In a chat with Entertainment Tonight, Affleck had shared that he is “nervous” about starring in a historical feature as it is completely different from the films he usually works in. The actor was last seen in Zack Snyder’s Justice League as Batman/Bruce Wayne and he is all set to reprise the character in DC’s The Flash.

The Last Duel stars Matt Damon as Jean de Carrouges, Adam Driver as Jacques Le Gris, Jodie Comer as Marguerite de Carrouges, Ben Affleck as Count Pierre d’Alençon, Harriet Walter as Nicole de Buchard, Nathaniel Parker as Sir Robert de Thibouville, Sam Hazeldine as Thomin du Bois, Michael McElhatton as Bernard Latour, and Alex Lawther as King Charles VI. The film was earlier scheduled to wrap production by early 2020 and release by December 2020 or at least in the first quarter of 2021. But all the plans had to be postponed after the coronavirus pandemic struck and the production was delayed. The filming later resumed in late September 2020 and wrapped up by October. The film is currently scheduled for a theatrical release on October 15, 2021.
